Anar Alizada Dr.Ivanov Paper 2 Evaluation of an Organization I am going to choose my organization as UDC. I have been a student here for three and a half years, I also been employed as a student employee for almost a year now. I am going to talk about some disadvantages and issues that UDC have got, my opinion on how to fix them and also advantages and what I like about this university. I have been here for that relatively short amount of time, but I have observed some things as a student. I am not going to such criticize UDC on my paper, of course as any university no matter public or private UDC has got some issues as well. Some of the obstacles and issues I experienced happened I when I just got here and started applying to school, it was the admissions department of the school. I experienced some frustration in other departments as well. When I came to the UDC to apply for the first time I stayed in a line for a long time, and even after that I was told that person that handles international application has been gone, so I basically waited for almost 3 hours just to be told that instead of being notified that I wont be able to see the person in charge of international students. It took me up to two weeks to reach that person even though I was in admissions office several days a week. After I finally reached the office, I was actually told that my transcripts got lost, so my principle had to resend them again with tracking. My transcripts were delivered but got lost again as well it was really frustrating for me to deal with it. I know also a lot of students have been having a lot of issues with Financial Aid office, luckily I was able to pay off my tuition right away so I did not have to deal with financial aspect of that office but more going through hassle with job application which actually took me a year and half to finally start on my job. I was simply promised to be starting job within the weeks and it stretched over three semesters. As an international student for me to work legally and not loose my OPT (optional practical training) would be to work on campus and that is why I was relying on it a lot. I also ran into a lot of troubles with International Student coordinator because I believe they were not trained good enough to handle international paperwork, I feel like those positions should be appointed to people that have been international students at some point themselves so they know the right procedures and to closely understand what some international students are going through. If they have not been through that process themselves they at least should be trained well enough to know basic procedures and process and later on can follow up actions by the book. Since I got to UDC about 4 years ago I noticed that a lot of majors were not available and there have been more that got shutdown. Recently UDC closed down a lot of majors and some majors are close to loose accreditation I feel like that could affect overall public image of the university as well as less big company employers trying to recruit students from UDC. Another issue would be not a large variety of majors available, which would lead to decline of students because of not available majors that they would like to select. The only solution for that would be to raise more money and apply for better grants from government. One of the things I would also like to see would be more online classes. I believe since there is a big majority of students who are working while in school we need more available online programs and classes. Sometimes it is hard to skip work to attend the university or after a long night of studying waking up for early classes and then going to work. Having online classes will allow students to manage their time better. For all the years I have been at UDC I felt like it was a commuter school, campus seems to be dead you can see people only in between classes when they are just going to their next class. There are usually some events going on at the campus but people are not informed well about it. I feel management can work on better notifying students via emails and other social networks so students are more aware of what is happening on university campus. Despite all the troubles and frustration that I have gone through at UDC I still like the school in terms of diversity and that does not only apply to students but the professors as well. We have students from almost 65 countries around the world and very diverse staff and professors who are bringing in more culture into UDC. Having diverse student force in classes leads to a larger opinion and more diverse discussions, this gives us chance to learn more about how others see the world and discover more about their background, culture and the way they think. I also observed despite professors being from different countries they also are professors at different universities around DMV area as well, and there are a lot of professors from big schools like Howard, Georgetown, and George Washington. This assures me that education that we get at UDC is not any worse that education the students are getting in those big schools. One advantage in my opinion that we have over those big schools is our classroom sizes. Having a smaller class leads to more interaction between instructor and students, and in my opinion that way student whenever they struggle with something have a better chance of understanding because they can easily ask the professor. Smaller classes also mean smaller lines for students during instructors office hours, that way any student that does not understand the topic or material can go after class hours and have a one on one session with the professor. Here I listed some problems that we as UDC students face and also some positive things that I also found in this school, I believe that there is a way for UDC to be great as it used to be back in the day. Paper 2

Evaluation of an Organization

For purpose of this organizational evaluation paper, the focus of my paper
will be UDC. This is an institution where I have been a student for the three and a
half years, and I have also been its employee as a student employee for almost a year
now. The paper will examine some advantages and disadvantages including
challenges that I have witnessed at UDC and my personal opinion on how the
challenges can be fixed. Though I have been here for a relatively short duration of
time, I have observed some disturbing things as a student. The paper will therefore
not be a criticism of UDC but a fair assessment of the institution given the fact that
there will always be challenges with institutions whether public or private and UDC
is not an exception. Some of the challenges and issues that I experienced happened
to me when I came to seek admission at the university’s admissions department.
The first-hand experience I got was not very pleasant for an institution of its high
standing.
During the first time I came to seek admission, I was kept waiting in the
queue for a long time before I was attended to. To make matters worse, when my
turn came, I was merely told that the officer I should see is the one who handles
international applications but was at the time so I should wait. I therefore patiently
waited for almost 3 hours only to be told that it will not be possible to see the
person in charge of international students as until another day. I got concerned and
I got into a conversation with a fellow student seeking admission and she narrated
her story of having been coming to seek an audience with the officer for the last one

week. It took me up to two weeks to access the person in charge even though I was
in the admissions office for several days for those three weeks.
When I finally got to see the person, I was informed that they could not trace
my academic transcripts as they were somehow lost and had to have them reposted
by my principal once again with tracking. The transcripts were then sent but got lost
misplaced and the whole exercise was turning to be a very frustrating and timewasting affair. It was in that frustrating state that I got to know from other students
how it was equally challenging getting help from the Financial Aid office, but luckily
I was able to pay to clear my tuition fees right away so I did not have to deal with the
financial aspect of that office.
However, I went through much worse with the endless inquiries and pushing
for my job application to work in the university which actually took me a year and a
half to go through before I was finally able to start working. I had been promised
that I would start working within weeks but this stretched to over three semesters.
As an international student, working legally meant having to work within the
university or risk losing my OPT (optional practical training) but it also turned out
to be a frustrating affair getting the approval on time yet I desperately needed this
job. I also ran into a lot of problems with International Student coordinator to a
point where I came to doubt their training on how to handle international students’
paperwork. It is my feeling that holders of such positions should have the necessary
training and exposure to international students at some point themselves so they
that they are well equipped in handling their affairs and understand well what such
international students go through. Even if they have not gone through that process

themselves, they should at least be well trained on basic procedures as well as
processes involved in dealing with issues related to international students
efficiently and competently.
I also noticed after my admission that most majors were not available for
studying and there has been a lot of this happening. Just recently, UDC closed down
a lot of the majors and there is a risk of losing accreditation in some courses as a
result of this as well as affecting overall credibility of its courses and public image.
This may result in prospective employers from big organizations failing to recruit
from the...
