Description

Question 1

What is dietary cholesterol? How does this differ from serum cholesterol?  Explain the differences between LDL and HDL cholesterol. Include the lab values used to determine healthy or unhealthy levels within the body? What can someone do to raise their good cholesterol and lower their bad cholesterol?

------

Carefully research this topic before posting.  Don't forget that you should have completed the assigned reading first.  To save yourself some time, consider using the assigned readings and additional resources to make your post.

If you find you are lacking information or want something more, you may consider outside research.  Think back to week 1 and the credible nutrition sources assignment.  Using those questions and critical thinking skills we discussed in regards to online research when you are doing the search for information to help with this discussion.  The use of non-credible or non-academic sources (blogs) will result in points lost.

When in doubt, if the same information is in the textbook, use this over the online reference you have located, unless you have found the primary source (the original source that the textbook then uses as their own reference for the same information- this is often from websites like the CDC and the USDA).

Use complete sentences, correct spelling and grammar, and well-written and organized paragraphs. You are required to cite your course resources in these discussions to show how you have applied what you have read. Initial posts are required to be at least 200 words and comments to classmates should be at least 75 words, unless otherwise directed.

Question 2

Select one of the following diets and provide a 1 day menu, including 3 meals and 2-3 snacks. When writing this up separate everything out into meals and snacks just as it would be consumed during the day (for example: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack).

Please choose from vegan, lacto-vegetarian, lacto-ovo-vegetarian, or ovo-vegetarian. You do not need to write in sentences for this (you may list out the menu). Make sure you include all relevant details, including serving sizes. You are not required to include calories or macronutrient information.  Your menu doesn’t need to include the food listed as your group name (that is just there for fun). Your diet should meet the 5 factors of a healthy diet that we discussed in week 1.  This includes balance and variety among the food groups on MyPlate.  If unsure how many servings from each food group to aim for, use the 1800 calorie MyPlate meal plan located here: https://www.myplate.gov/myplate-plan/results/1800-calories-ages-14-plus. For a vegan or ovo-vegetarian menu (both exclude dairy) the diary food group will consist instead of dairy alternatives that act as a replacement source of calcium in the diet. Remember, this is a menu for a single day for a one person.

Once your group members have posted their menus you should guess the type of menu provided by 5 different classmates. Each guess on a menu is worth 1 point (up to 5 points).

Rubric will be provided.

This is a "guessing game" so make sure not to give away the name of the type of menu you are describing (in the post or in the reference- use xxx if needed in the reference).

ONLY POST WITHIN YOUR ASSIGNED GROUP (you will not receive credit for posts made in any other group)

Grades will reflect how well you have followed these guidelines. I am eager to see each individual’s posts and interact with you.

DO NOT COPY A ONE DAY MENU FROM THE INTERNET, MAGAZINE, OR BOOK     This is considered plagiarism.  However, much like we do in real life, you can find recipes online for entrees, salads, soups, side dishes, etc that you want to include in your one day menu.  In this case you can indicate that you want to include a serving of xxxxx recipe and then you will cite the recipe as a reference.  You are not required to use recipes or list out recipes for this assignment, but I know some students are very interested in cooking and that these recipes are of interest to them.  Do not feel obligated to find a recipe- for example, if you indicate at dinner you are including 1 piece of vegetable lasagna you can just write "Vegetable lasagna- 1 slice, 3x3 inch".  You don't need to find a recipe for vegetable lasagna online unless you want to do this.  If you do copy and paste a recipe it must be given proper credit or it will be considered plagiarism, even if done unintentionally.  For this specific example you may want to give some key details, so a recipe could be helpful.  Were the noodles made with egg?  Is there cheese in the lasagna?  The answers to both will impact if your teammates can correctly guess your menu. More on this can be found in the directions posted within the group thread.

Question 3

You will not be eligible for credit for any posts made in a different group.  Please avoid this as it may be confusing to other members in those groups where you have not been assigned.

Please note: This team has a "wild card".  As there are more than 30 students enrolled in the class but not enough to make one more team, some groups will have an extra person.  This person will be describing something other than the 6 assigned organs for this activity.  You will not be penalized for incorrectly guessing on this.

Please note: Not everyone on the team may participate in the activity.  It is still early in the term and some students may be deciding if they will stay with the class.  For any organ not described, place it in the correct order and just indicate "not described" next to the organ name in place of writing in your team members name.  If you can enter the classmate name by process of elimination that is ok too.  Thanks!
