MODERN MANIFESTATION OF THE ISLAM
Modern Manifestation of the Islam
Islam is a religion that has traversed over 14 centuries and still continues to spread and
grow in areas like culture, architecture, and philosophy. The Muslim world was formed against
the grain in a period that was characterized by series of religious, sociocultural, and historical
conflicts. Diversity and complexity have surrounded the religion, and very rapid developments
and evolutions have been witnessed since its inception. The civilization of Islam fought against
many forces in the formative years. As a result, it ended up assimilating, refuting, and
considering elements from other groups like the Christians, Persians, Jews, and Greeks in pursuit
of robust achievements in science, philosophy, religion, and medicine (Hoyland, 2014). Almost
all the key principles that govern the Islam religion today were adopted during this time. Due to
the profoundly sophisticated process of embracing these principles, there arose unprecedented
tensions between the modern and traditional concepts within the religion, sometimes considered
as a battle between innovation and traditionalism. The current paper will explore the modern
manifestation of the religion.
The Early Modern Period
The period spanning from the 15th to the 16th centuries is popularly described as the early
modern era, and the religion was facing various challenges (Kirk, 2016). In response to these
difficulties, three chief Islamic Empires emerged and effectively turned the religion from being
merely a religious phenomenon to incorporate political ideals. The first one was known as the
Ottoman Empire and was based in Istanbul. In Persia, they created another powerful
establishment referred to as the Safavid Empire. The last one was Mughal Empire in India. The
three empires formed influential manifestations of the religion in the regions and the Islam soon

phenomenon that incorporated political, social, philosophical, and religious elements. They soon
grew to include various ethnic groups, glots, and religions. All in all, the starting point of all
these manifestations was the religion of the Muslims.
Expansion of the Ottoman Empire
The success of the empires triggered some revived interest in the Islam from the Western
society. Notably, the Ottoman Empire was expanding as the strength of the Christian Balkans
dwindled significantly (Karabell, 2009). The cultural and political affiliations of the Turks were
considered as very strong, and the Ottoman Empire was for that matter regarded as one of the
most dangerous in their time. Nonetheless, their ideologies were not as strong. Outsiders tried to
make political links with the Ottomans, and this was achieved through strategic alliances, neutral
stances, and wars meant for the furtherance of the political considerations, but the relationship of
these activities with the Christians was mild (Kirk, 2016). The interactions led to the formation
of some of the first images of the Islam faith in the modern West (Alrefai, 2015). Most of the
negative connotations that westerners hold towards the Arabs emerged from these wars and
