The puzzle of motivation
Introduction
Providing someone with reasons to behave or act in a certain way is what is termed as
motivation. In the Puzzle of Motivation video, Dan Pink discourages us against using money
which is an extrinsic motivator as a motivating factor in solving difficult problems. These kinds
of motivators are behind time as they worked for the old centuries where minimal work was
required and the solutions to problems were simple. He encourages us to rely on intrinsic
motivators and gives us several instances where these motivators have proven to work well.
Intrinsic motivators drive someone to perform a task for personal reasons (Baum & Lawrence,
2009).
I feel motivated to do things because they matter, because I like it, they are interesting or
it’s something important or is a part of something important. The outcome of doing something
with this approach is more fruitful compared to incentivizing people to perform better with
money. Commitment is required in coming up with solutions to critical problems and providing
solutions to things that have never been done before. In all the incidents he mentions to us, we
can see that in all of them intrinsic motivators work well compared to the extrinsic motivators.
Dan gives as an example of the candle problem which was carried out on two different
groups. The aim of the experiment was to attach the candle to the wall so that the wax doesn’t
drip onto the table. The first group was to be timed to establish norms and the average time it
would take for someone to solve that kind of problem. The second group, on the other hand, was
offered financial rewards. The outcome was shocking as the second group took three and a half
minutes longer to complete the task despite financial incentive. This proves that such incentives

can easily hinder creativity and narrow focus. In this era, most problems are hard and according
to Dan, such rewards work for simple tasks that do not require creativity. In this case, I prefer
using intrinsic motivators compared to extrinsic motivators.
Money which is an extrinsic motivator motivates me in life to work harder. This is
because to acquire basic needs like food and water one must have money...
