Provide at least two modern examples of how the United States has increased its food production. Using at least two scholarly sources, discuss how these changes have affected the environment, and what impact they have on food safety?
Prior to First Lady Michelle Obama campaign against obesity and healthy food consumption, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt created what was referred to as a “victory garden” (Turk, J., & Bensel, T., 2011). The purpose of the above was to encourage Americans to grow their own crops, because food production decreased as a result of the war. While Eleanor idea differed somewhat from Michelle’s, the ladies had the American people in mind in reference to survival when the country was enduring economic crises. Michelle encourages American people to eat healthy and consume locally grown produce in order to achieve and maintain wellness. The above encourages saving to families, it have “environmental impact agriculturally because it reduces the miles in which the product must travel” (Turk & Bensel, 2011, sect. 3.5). According to Turk & Bensel, “food miles are measured by the distance in which the food must travel before reaching its destination” (Turk & Bensel, 2011); thereby transmitting chemicals (fossil fuels) into the environment. Also, foods that are locally grown are fresher and contain less preservative and chemical used when planting and packaging.
Local markets in the United States have been established for the purpose of citizen’s accessibility to healthy food at lower prices. The United States Department of Agricultural in conjunction with local producers collaborated to bring locally grown produce to our citizens. Statistics show that “there were 7,864 farmer markets listed in USDA’s National Market Directory”(Agricultural marketing service, par. 1 ); therefore citizens are supporting local farmers.
