Description

1. Post one or more thoughtful question(s) to one or more of your peers' posts below.

The (a) and (b) are about Reinhold Steinbeck's (Global Educator, Entrepreneur, and Design Innovation Strategist) presentation

(a) After listening to Mr. Steinbeck’s lecture, I gained a new perspective on what shapes intrinsic motivation, and how our environment/social set up can shape the way we perceive creativity . When Mr. Steinbeck brought our attention to the way classrooms are set up from adolescence to adulthood, it made me self reflect on how our perception on learning can really be affected by our surroundings. Whether that be by the people we interact with on a daily basis or the setting we spend most of are time in looks like. For example, in a kindergarten classroom, there are colors and shapes and big bold bright letters and words splattered all over the walls of a room. Learning and creativity is celebrated during this time period in our lives. However, as we get older the creativity we were taught to pursue at a young age fades away and takes on different forms. Creativity can now be express through our ideas, words, writing, dialogue, etc. As we grow older, we find ourselves to be more intrinsically motivated, which helps us find different ways to express ourselves and at the same time obtain what we deem as success.

(b) Before Reinhold Steinbeck's presentation, I had never really thought about how adults lose their creativity from when they were a child. I always assumed if you aren't creative when you are older, you simply weren't born a creative person. I never considered the fact that those people who lost their childish naivety, excitement, and creativity may have been more likely to be influenced into different ways of thinking and acting that diminished their creativity, which is what I learned during the presentation today. Adults do have certain expectations in our society (e.g., being mature, providing for themselves and their families, etc.), and the terms "adulthood," "professionalism," and "maturity" have somewhat boring and serious connotations and imply that traits like creativity don't really have a strong belonging. With adulthood comes a uniformity aspect, such as dress codes or behavior protocols, which in turn diminishes variance and how people are able to differentiate and express themselves. This presentation raised this topic to me and provided me with many reasons that I had never thought of before, but will continue to consider and try to change for those around me.

The (c) is about

Article Two: “How Technology Can Speed Help to Malnourished Children in the Effort to End Global Hunger”. Bill Briggs. Dec 2, 2018. https://news.microsoft.com/transform/app-end-global-hunger/?ocid=lock (Links to an external site.)

(c) The take away message that I got was that the foundation is using automated technology to help tackle environmental and social issues around the world. They are communicating with parties around the world and providing help to them by asking what they need instead of first offering a product allowing them to tailor their work in the area. The foundation is working with multiple different organizations that previously didn't communicate. Another aspect is that new technology is making it easier for the foundation to help in societal problems that required more resources previously.

The app hopes to help reduce malnutrition around the world by allowing smartphones to measure the children and determine if they are suffering from malnutrition or are starting to. This is important since by identifying malnutrition parents can feed nutrient rich food to the children allowing them to recover. Also with the information that the app provides relief efforts can improve distribution and reach more people that need help using the resources more effectively. This could reduce the amount of deaths due to malnutrition by a huge amount and increase the quality of life on the children in the areas where the app is in use.

2. Fully and thoughtfully respond to one or more questions from your peers below.

The (a) is about Reinhold Steinbeck's (Global Educator, Entrepreneur, and Design Innovation Strategist) presentation

(a) My post: At the beginning of the class, Mr. Steinbeck mentioned that "Innovative teams are at the core of every successful company or organization." Throughout today's lecture, I explored more about the importance of a team and its direct connection to creativity. I learned that not only society, family, and culture have an impact on creativity that we need to understand, but also space and the psychological environment adds influence on teamwork and creativity. We should always be improving ourselves while knowing our limitations and asking for help and advice as a team in this class.

My peer comment: Do you think teams are important to an individual's creativity, more so than the individual's own will to try to be unique? I feel that most people try to blend into society so that they can more easily make a living, by just doing average work, and thus lose their creativity not through being by themselves but rather by choice.

The (b) is about

(b) My post: In the video from Autodesk Foundation (2021), my biggest takeaway is how nonprofits like Autodesk Foundation, WeRobotics, and BuildChange have come together to use technology to create solutions for various problems in society. Autodesk Foundation has partnered with WeRobotics to use drones to deliver medicine and solutions for disadvantaged communities. Further, a partnership with BuildChange has enabled the organization to create building solutions for communities in disaster-prone regions. These partnerships demonstrate the implication of technology in everyday life. Companies are leveraging the advantages offered by technology to solve issues in the community. Autodesk Foundation (2021) demonstrates how different facets of society, including nonprofits, governmental, and corporates, are employing technology to advance human interests. Autodesk Foundation is exploring how to automate everyday activities. Some of the projects that stood out include the solar lights for children in low socio-economic countries, which will promote education. BuildChange’s initiative of rebuilding after a disaster is particularly essential considering the prevalence of disasters in the recent past with climate change. Autodesk Foundation is creating admirable solutions that will make significant impacts on people’s lives.

According to Briggs (2019), Jochen Moninger is overseeing the creation of an app called Child Growth Monitor. Having spent years in impoverished countries in Africa and the Middle East, Moninger has partnered with Microsoft through the company Welthungerhilfe to create a cloud-based app to address malnutrition among children. The app will be useful in scanning children and detecting instances of malnutrition (Briggs, 2019). Such information will enable stakeholders to offer nutrients needed for their specific needs. Child Growth Monitor has already been deployed in rural regions in India. The data shows that 40% of children suffer from malnutrition, demonstrating the importance of identifying where the needy children are to expedite aid (Briggs, 2019). Child Growth Monitor will help health workers identify children and reduce treatment time, addressing adverse effects like mortality and wasting. Child Growth Monitor could address issues associated with malnutrition like poor cognitive skills, late development, lack of education, and the cycle of poverty (Briggs, 2019). The app will enable governments and nonprofits to redirect aid to solving hunger rather than collecting data. If stakeholders know where the hungry children are, they can get aid to them fast enough.

My peers comments:

Your summary is very detailed, but do you think this app is really practical to use in the real world? Also how do we test the science behind this app?

Did the article mention how governments and non-profits will go about redirecting aid and what level of data would be needed to redirect aid?

For example, how would they explain and competently verify moving aid from one region to another?

I am sure aid is being moved and distributed even as I write this comment but I am also a novice in this subject and am curious about your thoughts?

Question for (a): Why does creativity fade as we get older?

Question for (c): How effective is the app in measuring whether or not children are suffering
from malnutrition?
Part 2
1. Do you think teams are essential to an individual's creativity, more so than the individual’s
own will to be unique?
Teams are an essential aspect of creativity, and teams can add to the imagination of an
individual. Teams add to the creativity of the person because the individual can get
mentorship in teams. By regular interaction with other team members, the individual can gain
new insights, increasing creativity. Teams also add to creativity because, in the team, there is
regular communication with team members, which ensures that one can understand new
things, which previously were not known. Interactions in the team centre ensure that one can
appreciate something that once was not clear to them. This means that the creativity of the
individual can increase significantly when one is part of a team. The team will promote
creativity because one will be motivated in the team, stimulating one to think more and
become more creative. Teams help individuals become more creative because teams consist
of diverse individuals who have different opinions and experiences. This means tha...
