Dear Students,
Attached are materials to assist you with your GIS
data processing and analysis. Please remember
that the GIS Tutorial is also installed with the GIS
Software (ArcGIS) which can also be of further
assistance to you as you process and analyze
your Gis data.
As I have repeatedly informed you, the GIS
software - ArcGIS is required for this part of the
project and you must use the Lab (CBEIS 257) or
the open lab (CBEIS 352). All students must
request access to CBEIS 257 in advance via email
only.
No late report will be accepted, and all
presentation are fixed (see date and time in the
Activities schedule).
Thanks.

BODY OF TERM PROJECT REPORT (F.K. Wilson)
Theme: Enhancing a major highway.
Title: (Make a title based on your selected theme).
Body of the Report:
Please find out what is a report.
The body of your report should be 5 pages (4 plus written pages plus a cover page). The
Font/Size - Times New Roman/12. Line Spacing - Single; Margins - Normal (1” around).
I. INTRODUCTION
Write an introduction about your Term Project in general (about 1/2 a
page).
II. STUDY AREA
Your study area is the county in Maryland selected, and is important to
write something about your study area. Readers would like to get some
idea about your study area; write about 1/2 a page, and include a
figure/map) of your study area.
III. DATA
Your data (County, LULC, Road, Soil, and Stream) for this Term
Project would be GIS coverages acquired/obtained by you (site to search
include SHA, USGS, Dept. of Planning). Write something about your
data (each of the GIS coverages acquired) so that your readers would be
able get an idea of your dataset (importance of each coverage).
IV. METHOD (please use your notes, the ArcGIS Tutorial, & emailed
materials)
You will be using the GIS methodologies including some procedures
(Recodes, Buffer, and Overlay) to analyze the data. Please save your
analysis (use "Save As”, and navigate to your Workspace and save in
your CEGR 110 folder and USB Drive as well).
V. RESULTS and CONCLUSION
Please read about Results and Conclusion. Use your analysis results for
your result section. Make figures of the data/analyzed coverage(s) and
save in JPEG format. You should also make a table of some attribute
(ex. your LULC/Soil types - say, Table 1) and use in your write-up.
In conclusion, write something about this project and its outcomes? How
important was the project in your county?
Reference (following the Results and Conclusion)
Please check out what is a reference. The materials used in conduction this project
must be listed including your Textbook, other books, other GIS
books/papers/periodicals, and web sites used in your project. Please note that for
this report, it should be about a quarter of a page or less.
Appendix (a separate page following your Report – page 6)
Please find out what appendix is and how it can be used. Please note that for this
report, it should be about 2 pages.

HINTS TO HELP IN YOUR WRITING
By asking yourself some questions such as listed below and coming up with the
answers will help you write your report. Just imagine you are talking to someone
about what you did. Use the third person singular such as (i) “ArcGIS was used for
this analysis/term project" or (ii) “An overlay procedure was conducted, using
Roads and LULC coverages".
The 4 Ws and H:
1.
What?
- Title (informs about the project)
2.
Why? - - Justification (importance of the project/task)
3.
Where? – Study Area (where project was conducted)
4.
When?
- Time Period Covered (LULC/Demo date)
5.
How?
- Method (processes involved)
GIS DATA PROCESSING & ANALYSIS (F.K Wilson).
NOTE: The following is to assist you with your GIS data processing and analysis. Once you
have selected the major highway in your county for enhancement, you should then determine the
GIS procedures that you want to use to analyze the GIS data (Road, LULC, Soil, and Stream).
You must use the GIS software ArcGIS for your GIS processing and analysis. In order to use
CBEIS 257, student must obtain permission in advance via email from me. ArcGIS is also
installed in CBEIS 352 (an open lab). As you proceed with your processing/analysis, do not
forget to use "Save As” and navigate to your “workspace or USB Drive" and save your work
Project.
I. Select
Use the GIS geo-analysis tool “Select” to choose the highway to be
enhanced. Identify all relevant attributes (Name, Length, Surface
Materials, Width, # Lanes, Ave. Width of Lanes, Median (Y/N), Median
Type, Median Width, # Bridges, Bridge Locations, #
Underpass/Overpass, Underpass/Overpass Locations, and Others).
II. Buffer
Use “Buffer" to create a desired buffer distance/zone around the selected
highway. (ex. 100 ft – to accommodate the necessary 8+2 lanes
proposed). You will determine the size of the buffer zone you need.
III. Clip
Use “Clip” to create a LULC/Soil Clip Coverages of the areas around the
selected highway; a Polygon Coverage will be always be obtained.
IV.Overlay
Use "Overlay” to determine the relationships between different
feature/coverages to enable assessment of your enhancement (qualitative
cost assessment and feasibility aspects as well). Ex. What is the
relationship between Road and the LULC/Soil coverages? You would
like to know the area/extent the enhanced road will cover on the
LULC/Soil coverages to determine their suitability or not.
