What are the ethical dilemmas for the nurse and patient or family?

Ethical dilemmas are those problems without satisfactory resolution.Nurses normally face
ethical dilemmas nearly on daily basis. It does not matter where they practice it or where they
carry out their assigned duties. The ethical decisions they face can really impact them and their
patients. According to research, there is no solid solution for ethical dilemma. Variations in the
principles of nursing ethics give the nurse the standard way to base ethical decisions upon. The
ethical approach is normally shaped by the beliefs, values and experiences of the nurse (Bomar,
2004).

An example of an ethical dilemma is when the nurse is faced with a challenge to support a
patient in deciding between a therapy that will prolong the patient’s life but unavoidably
compromise the quality of life. In this case, the patient may live longer but will significantly
experience a series of side effects resulting from the therapy (Perrin & McGhee, 2006).
