Let X represent to the unknown number. then solve the equation.

1) The quotient of a number and 12 is one-third.

2) The product of a number and seven is the same as negative sixty-three.

1.  x/12 = 1/3 (quotient means to divide)

Multiply both sides by 12

12 * x/12 = 1/3 * 12

x = 4

2. 7x = -63 (product means to multiply)

Divide both sides by 7

7x/7 = -63/7

x = -9 (since -9 * 7 = -63)

3.  -8 + x = 42

Add eight to both sides

-8 + 8 + x = 42 + 8

x = 50

Best me if you think I explained it better.  Let me know if you have any other questions regarding these types of algebraic equations. I can take you step by step through the problem solving process.  I have a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Penn State.  I'll be glad to help you with anything you need.
