Cultural pluralism
This is when two different cultures are able to live together while the minorities of the two retain
their identifying beliefs and customs which are in congruence with the rules and norms
governing the major society. The major culture only accepts the smaller ones to join them and be
part of them only when they adhere to their protocols and they are in harmony with their set
laws.
Examples of cultural pluralism include; In the United States Of America English is the dominant
language never the less the natives have accepted Chinese calligraphy to be taught in their
country, in India the majority of the people are Hindus and they communicate using the Hindi
language at the same time there are small groups of people who stay in India who have a
different culture, religion, and way of speaking while they still live side by side with Hindus
(Oostindie, 2005).
During the genesis of cultural pluralism, there was a lot of antagonisms that was exhibited by the
dominant group towards the newcomers who were the minority. This antagonism was stimulated
as a result of several factors. For example, the minorities were despised and shown prejudice by
the majority because of their culture. This created a form of racism that made the newcomers feel
undesired and unfit to join the larger society. For this case, too much antagonism was thus
created in between different cultures hence making it hard for the existence of pluralism in the
culture (Ong, Dominguez, Friedman, Schiller, Stolcke, Wu, & Ying, 1996).
Today antagonism has reduced and thus different people can live together in harmony even if
they have different beliefs and way of living. This has thus been made possible because of
