Running Header: EACH MINUTE COUNTS

Every Minute Counts
The American economy thrives through the use of advertisements that plague the general
public from every form of media and draw in potential customers. The main objective of ads is to
inform and motivate and at the same time change the thinking pattern of the recipient. An
example of this is the advertisement “Each Minute Counts”, which is meant to draw in the

general public. The ad has a large clock in it with a gray seal that is stuck in between the hour
and minute hand. The seal appears to be in deep agony. Underneath the animal is some blood
dripping down the face of the clock. The most conspicuous colors used in this ad are black and
red. Just above the clock are written words, which read “Every 60 seconds a species dies out,
Each minute counts. Each donation helps.” The firm that is making the advertisement is BUND
and their ad combines pathos, ethos, varying colors and very bold text illustrations that are
catchy to the viewer’s eyes and convey information.
"Every Minute Counts" utilizes a great deal of emotion with a specific end goal to
influence the general public to donate. The top most right corner holds the logo BUND, which is
a word signifying the relationship of the environment and nature as friends This creates ethos
since the observer easily identifies that it is indeed a trusted ad with information from reliable
sources. This open administration declaration builds up sentiment by demonstrating lots of
feeling in the seal's face, a use of pathos to emotionally connect the audience to the ad. The seal
is gradually however without a doubt being squished to death.
The observer can plainly observe and comprehend the torment and suffering that the
animal is undergoing. This acts as enough evidence that it is indeed in pain which in turn makes
the viewer feel that something must be done as soon as possible to alleviate the suffering of the
seals. It is exactly what BUND wants done but with immediate effect and more attention. The
creatures aren't being slaughtered at the hands of a clock, but it represents the poor situations
and medications that adversely affect the animals. Ideally, in the wake of seeing this ad, more
individuals will need to give to BUND to help creatures reach a life of normalcy. As should be
obvious, ethos and sentiment are crucial parts of this exposition.
