Copy and Paste the SPSS output into the word document for the calculations portion of the problems. (Please remember to answer the questions you must interpret the SPSS output). 1. A researcher is interested to learn if there is a linear relationship between the hours in a week spent exercising and a person’s life satisfaction. The researchers collected the following data from a random sample, which included the number of hours spent exercising in a week and a ranking of life satisfaction from 1 to 10 ( 1 being the lowest and 10 the highest). Find the mean hours of exercise per week by the participants. 3. Find the variance of the hours of exercise per week by the participants. 4. Determine if there is a linear relationship between the hours of exercise per week and the life satisfaction by using the correlation coefficient. 5. Describe the amount of variation in the life satisfaction ranking that is due to the relationship between the hours of exercise per week and the life satisfaction. 6. Develop a model of the linear relationship using the regression line formula. © Grand Canyon University 2016 2

RESEARCH METHODS

What are the key differences between qualitative and quantitative research?
Quantitative and qualitative research approaches are all applied when collecting and
analyzing the data. The quantitative approach is usually used by researchers who employ survey
methods while the qualitative approach is based on understanding something from a closer
perspective. Quantitative research is based on the need to explain a certain occurrence or trends
while quantitative research depends on the opinion of the respondents in the survey, opinions as
well as polls (Punch, 2013). Moreover, quantitative research entails asking narrow or specific
questions in order to obtain observable and measurable data on the variables. On the other hand,
qualitative research is based on the exploration method and employed to help understand
opinions, motivations, and reasons for other people.
The other difference in the qualitative and quantitative research approaches lies in the
research problem section. Quantitative questions are used to direct hypotheses or type of
questions asked in the quantitative study. However, in the qualitative research problem helps to
determine the importance of the central idea. In addition, qualitative research approach uses
open-ended approaches when interviewing the participants whereas quantitative research
approach uses closed-ended approaches when collecting data. Quantitative research uses
mathematical calculations and numbers while the qualitative research is based upon oral or
written things from an observation or an individual.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of qualitative research designs?
The strengths and weaknesses of the qualitative remains subjects of debate. The main
strength of the qualitative research design is that the researcher is the main instrument of
research unlike in the quantitative research where the researcher employs various tools in the
data collection. Therefore, it is evident that qualitative research allows the researcher to collect
