psychological impacts for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Introduction Overview:
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is one of the most prevalent public health issues in the
world. COPD is a collection of diseases that cause patients' airways to become obstructed, thus
making their breathing difficult. COPD increases the likelihood of a patient to develop breathing
problems, especially when they are exposed to stressful situations. In their recent report, Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that in the US, COPD affects 16 million people.
COPD is the fourth largest cause of death worldwide, causing more than 2.3 million deaths in
2016. The majority of people that are afflicted with COPD are yet to be diagnosed. Patients of
COPD are vulnerable to many negative psychological impacts. This paper identifies depression,
anxiety, and quality of life as some of the major psychological impacts on patients with COPD.
