Description
Here you will find the information for the 3010 Pre-departure Project. This is a large project, which will be due prior to us heading to Italy (Due Sunday, May 28th). I have set the course and this project in this way to meet pre-departure hours and so that the assignments/requirements during our 4 weeks spent in Italy will be minimalized. However, that does mean the work load upfront will require some time and dedication.
Objective: To gain a greater understanding of an international location, including the social, cultural, political, legal, and economic forces associated with and their impact on tourism.
The pre-departure project is a two-part project in one submission. The first or rather main component will focus primary on a country of your choice (see list for options and then use link provided to choose), while the second part will focus on a region or sub-region (area) of Italy, our destination country, which will be assigned to you (see assigned list).
As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I look forward to reading your completed work.
Best wishes,
Dr. Don

Introduction
Each country has clear rules that can either impact positively or negatively on the tourism
sector. There are countries which are war tone hence posing security concerns to tourists visiting
them. Others have different seasons that are not favorable during certain times of the year.
Therefore, it is necessary that before a person visits another country, it is advisable to conduct a
feasibility analysis so as to determine the factors that are likely to affect the tourist during his/her
stay in the chosen country. The study will analyze the social, cultural, political, legal, and
economic forces associated with and their impact on tourism in Egypt and Umbria Provence in
Italy so as to gain an understanding of the selected international locations.
The History of Egypt
Egypt is a country in the Mediterranean world divided into the North Red Land and the
South white land in ancient times. However, King Menes unified the two kingdoms hence
becoming the first king of the first dynasty. Through his leadership, the capital of ancient Egypt
was at White Walls which was later renamed to Memphis. During the early dynastic period,
there was the development of kinship in the Egyptian society. In addition to this time majority of
the Egyptians were farmers growing wheat and barley. The farmers depended on River Nile
flooding for water for irrigation of their land and fertilizers. Egypt has had many transitions from
the old kingdom to the new kingdom. The old country was characterized by the third dynasty of
Pharaohs whereas the new kingdom was ruled by kings such as Amenhotep III among others.

Mark the Evangelist was among the pioneers of Christianity in Egypt. However, the
invasion and conquering of Egypt by the Islamic empire led to a blending of Egyptian beliefs and
the indigenous beliefs hence the creation of Sufi orders. In 1882 after a great famine struck
Egypt that claimed the lives of many of its citizens and causing bankruptcy, the British under the
rule of Evelyn Baring took over the administration of Egypt. To push for liberalization Egypt
government replaced Evelyn Baring with Eldon Gorst. This movement formed the basis towards
the struggle for independence. The fight for independence continued until 1953 when Egypt was
declared independent with Muhammad Naguib as their first president. This freedom did not stop
the wars and civil unrests in the country. During the period of the 1980s and 1990s, there
emerged terrorist attacks on foreign tourists and government officials. In the year 2011, there
were increased protests by the citizens against Mubarak's government which led to his
resignation. These revolutions resulted in changes in the constitution used until the present
period (Andrews, 2012).
Social and Cultural Characteristics of the Egyptians
Muslims are the dominant religion in Egypt. The majority of the people are Muslims
hence the Muslim culture is widely practiced in the area. The religious principles have a
significant influence on the culture of Egyptians. Therefore, most businesses in Egypt are closed
on Fridays since it is their Holy day for worship. Therefore, tourists have to consider visiting the
country during the other days of the week if they want to receive full attention. Moreover, during
the holy month of Ramadan, Egyptians are only allowed to do business for six hours. Tourists
have the freedom to enter the mosques but are required to remove their shoes. During religious
services, no aliens are allowed into the mosque. The family is regarded with much dignity, and
all members have an obligation to address and respect the extended family members. Due to the

dominance of the Muslim culture, other religions such as Christians practice the Muslim culture.
For example, despite the fact that Christians are not required to fast during Ramadan, they are
prohibited from eating or drinking in public. Tourists have to be aware of this culture so as to
avoid any violation.
Egyptian women have to follow the Muslim principles hence not allowed to mingle and
associate with an alien freely. Their clothing should cover the arms and legs and preserve their
beauty for their husbands. Women are also allowed to hold corporate positions and careers. The
official language of the Egyptians is Arabic with the majority being descendants of Eastern
Hamitic backgrounds. Due to water for irrigation for their farming practices, the majority of the
population of Egyptian live around Nile valley and delta. Regarding entertainment, Egypt has
established live performance arenas such as the National Symphony to provide entertainment to
both the locals and foreign tourists visiting the area. The live events are characterized by an
emphasis on the cultural practices of the area. There are also museums that contain the historical
emoluments and artifacts used during the ancient periods. The galleries also showcase the
wildlife and the scenery of the country Allonsy A. (n.d.).
The Political System of Egypt
Egypt is governed by rule and regulations outlined in the constitution, which is the
supreme governing authority. The law aimed at determining the relationship that exists between
the government and its citizens. The law also defines Egypt as a democratic system that is
designed to maintain peaceful co-existence in the country. The country is headed by a president
who is democratically elected by the citizens. The president is also the commander-in-chief of
the armed forces hence the mandate to protect the country’s borders against any attack. The

administrative organ comprised of the ministers running different ministries in the government.
Egypt has a ministry of tourism that puts in place policies concerning the tourism sector. The
legislative arm of the government is responsible for the enactment of different laws and planning
for the development projects of the country. The parliament can amend laws or pass new
legislations that affect the tourism sector. Due to this reason, it is necessary for a tourist to be
well versed with the political system and the responsibility of the parliament (Wickham, 2005).
Moreover, the country has an independent judicial s...
