Introduction
Caramelo in a novel developed by one of the finest authors Cisneros. The novel follows
the personal issues that the society makes them visible to women folks as well as cultural
differences that exist between the Mexican and the United States citizens despite being neighbors.
Her life is full of tragedies, and thus she asserts that the storyline of Caramelo is based on real
issues that women are exposed to in the society where they do not have significant control over
their destiny. This consideration within the novel, therefore, provides a significant understanding
of some key themes, which are developed using fictions characters to advance the key messages
that she sought to pass to her audience.
The understanding of the novel is based on the understanding of the key underlying issues,
which are significant in creating an enabling environment where different cultural identities can
be pulled together in creating a better understanding between individuals across different culture.
Cultural issues are still a significant problem even in the current society where one group feels that
they are more superior to others by just considering their skin pigmentation, which is not the most
significant approach to cultural differences that exist between communities. Being left out in the
understanding of these common aspects within family gathering brings significant emotional pain
to individuals being ignored.
Race and culture
This theme is significantly developed through Celaya Reyes also known as Reyes when
they visit the Mexican city from their homeland in Chicago. This was always their annual trip since
her paternal grandparents were from the Mexican city and thus it is quite clear that they are born
in a more intercultural marriage that seeks to create the existing stereotypes that existed between

the United States culture and the Mexican culture. There is significant understanding of the
underlying issues that bring about these considerations within families and even though theirs
exists marriages between these two cultural backgrounds, it has been significantly difficult to break
the underlying negative bonds that were developed where one culture is considered superior to the
other.
There exist significant disparities between the Mexican culture and the United States
culture where the Mexican down look upon their United States counterparts and thus; as a result,
there is the need for Lala to undergo a transformation with an aim to reassert herself within the
Mexican culture. There is a significant reference to skin, color, language fluency family and point
of origin, which creates a unique consideration of the underlying issues where the question of what
