VOTING IN NATIONAL ELECTIONS

Introduction

Voting is the process by which citizens exercise their democratic right to the ballot by
electing their preferred leaders and rejecting those they don’t want. I support the view that voting
should be mandatory during elections. In this research paper, my main areas of concern are in the
history of balloting, the background of compulsory voting, examples of countries that have
practiced compulsory voting and the consequences that result from using it. In most countries,
the right to vote is stipulated clearly in the Constitution. It is not a must meaning that the law
cannot punish people who decide not to go vote.
During elections, especially the national elections, some people turn up to vote while an
equally significant number fail to show up for this important exercise. This is a norm in many
countries of the world. As a remedy to the solution, there have been proposals and debates on
whether to make voting a mandatory exercise.
Background on mandatory voting
When this process of balloting is made a compulsory practice, measures will be put
across to ensure that those who default or fail to turn up for the process are fined. The legal
consequences can range from imprisonment to monetary penalties. Voting in most jurisdictions
is as a result of free will, but I support this system of mandatory voting because it compels and
provides an extra push to the people ...
