Among the most important components of institutions are its values. Institutions have a set of values or norms that must be followed. Individuals that want to remain members of their chosen institution must follow the institutions' accepted behavior or soon they will be kicked out. An example would be a religion or even a specific church. If you don't follow their rules on acceptable behavior you have no choice but to get out. Nations sometimes have the power to change institutions for example, a government can pass legislation in which it allows the church to participate in its politics or it can pass laws forcing separation of church and state. Some countries in the Arab world, for example, strengthen the institution by allowing the government and the dominant religion to become almost one and the same.
