about creating stories with wild and wide imaginations. However, as the time went by, this
situation tended to be changed, to meet various audiences’ needs. Therefore, some new writing
styles came out.
Andersen is one such fantastic innovator. He reimagined old writing styles using the
traditions of the folk tale and folk legend and transformed them to make them adequate to his
modern society.
Traditional tales is the earliest writing styles that explore and unfold within the themes:
magic, skill, good, evil, rich and poor, wise, foolish, just and unjust, the relationship between
people and the seen or the unseen around them and others. These tales when they were written
down mostly include the most direct and best-known archetypes in a story. They include hero,
tricksters, shape shifters, witches, influencer, herald, and others. This also includes people who
live in the castles such as kings, queens, and others. Tales also include magical characters such
as creatures, animals, and inhabitants of the fairy world such as elves, pixies, goblins and dwarfs
(Roberts, 1972).
Snow White is an archetypal traditional tale. The merits of the traditional tales reside in
their fulfillment of several characteristics unique to traditional tales. In the beginning of the tale,
a stately royal couple takes a stroll along a lake frozen over by winter. It is described with such
calmness and appeal, as is the typical beginning of all traditional tales. Unfortunately, the queen
has a nose bleeding encounter that ruins the whiteness of the snow. This sets the stage for her to
wish for a beautiful daughter, as the snow that had been ruined, but as red as the blood that

ruined it. This instantly brings out another characteristic of traditional tales – contrast. There is
no real way in life that one can be as white as snow, and as red as blood.
As the tale progresses, we see that the king and the queen have no names appended to
them. In traditional tales, the characters have no names appended to them except the role tags in
