Abstract
The contribution by the African American in medicine during the civil war is part of
American history that is less known approximately three hundred thousand African American
soldiers and sailors took part in the United States civil war. It is the knowledge that is common to
most if not all Americans. However, they do not know the contributions of the African American
doctors and nurses in the army who worked industriously to save lives as well fight the war
diseases. Based on the research of Robert Slawson, an American physician in 2006, these men
and women were introduced to the public. The paper covers the contributions of these
professions who dedicated their lives to the service of the nation.

At the inception of the 19th century, James Smith, an African American graduated with a
medical degree from Glasgow University in Scotland. Before that, most physicians were taught
as apprentices. David Peck was the first African American to get a medical degree in the United
States of America. Twenty African American had obtained medical degrees and practicing
medicine by the end of the civil war, and 12 of these medics served in the American army. Of the
