Hydrogen gas can be prepared by reaction of zinc metal with aqueous HCl:

Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) --> ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g)

How many grams of zinc would you start with if you wanted to prepare 4.00L of H2 at 354mm Hg and 27.5*C?

Feb 1st, 2015

Moles of H2 formed= PV/RT

P=(354/760)=0.466 atm

V=4.00 L

T=27.5 C=298.5K

n=0.466*4/0.0821*298.5=0.076 mol

THus moles of Zn=0.076 mol

Mass of Zn=0.076*65=4.95 g
