Title: Gender relations according to Medea by Euripides and A Rose for Emily by William
Faulkner.
The existence of traditions in different societal settings has continually led to the
definition of gender roles. There has been a major controversy on the existence of these roles in
the present societies whereby these roles can be derived from the exact day-to-day activities that
they engage in. Traditionally, in some settings, a woman would be portrayed to be a family
indicator where they would hold roles in taking care of the children, cooking, and as a mirror of
the family among other family listings alongside being objects owned by the men and would be
expected to be subject to them at all cost. But in the recent past, these roles have been changing
where women can be found controlling major reforms in the society, studying and engaging in
crucial society undertakings as well as men. On the basis of Medea by Euripides and A Rose for
Emily by William Faulker, gender has been associated with different roles in the diverse societal
settings and this paper seeks to identify these roles bestowed upon the gender and especially the
female gender as compared to male in these male-dominated societies.
In the ancient Greek society, women were considered to be of low or no major
importance as compared to the men where they would have few rights, a very bleak future and
no room for personal development and also they would never enjoy room for expression and

personal opinions as they were considered as objects subject to men. In the play by Euripides,
Medea has been structured to possess both male and female tendencies where the male
tendencies take a deep root in her while Jason on the other side has been shown to be womanly.
The play has entirely abandoned the gender roles by switching the defining characteristics of
each to the other. Medea has been structured as a villain wherein the beginning of the play, the
nurse is s discussing the Medea’s horrible deeds where she says that ‘…my mistress Medea
would not have sailed for the towers of the land of Locus, her heart on fire with passionate love
for Jason; nor would she have persuaded the daughters of Pelias to kill their father...
