Description

Select a research topic:

1. Is there a connection between sleep deprivation and academic performance (or between sleep deprivation and other outcomes that might be interesting to you)?

2. Is there a connection between exercise and cognitive function (e.g., learning and memory)? You could focus on older adults if you would like.

3. Is there a connection between social media use and behavior (e.g., self-esteem, anxiety, depression, self-identity, interpersonal relationships, etc.)?

4. What does research reveal about the validity of eyewitness memory/testimony?

5. Is there a relationship between watching violent TV/movies or playing violent video games and aggression in children and/or adolescents?

Or you may choose your own topic. The topic must be emailed to Professor Lopez no later than Monday, April 24, 11:59 PM. You must receive approval before you start writing.

#PART A: Find an article

Use the instructions below (and explained in class) to find an academic journal which directly relates to your research question. This article must be a psychology- related academic, peer-reviewed empirical journal article pertaining to the research topic (as explained in class; see slides on “Finding and Reading Research”). Make sure this in not a news article or a website article, as it will not be accepted. Furthermore, make sure this is not a review article. The article you select must be an original study with its own method and results section, not an article that reviews other research.

Go to the Fullerton College Library webpage (library.fullcoll.edu). Click on Databases and go to EBSCOhost.

  1. Be sure to select the following three databases from the list of databases: Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, ERIC, PsycARTICLES.
  2. Select “full text” and “peer reviewed” journals, set the date range to be 2002- 2017 (the last 15 years), and select “Journal Article” under document type.
  3. Evaluate your results. Read the titles, abstracts, and skim the Introduction and Discussion sections to determine whether the article will be satisfactory. You may have to go back and change your search terms to yield different results. Each student should have a printed copy to read completely. You will turn in your article with your write-up. To receive the 10 points for Part A, list the following details about your article at the top of the page:
    1. Research Topic:
    2. Article Title:
    3. Article Author(s):
    4. Journal Title:
    5. Date of publication:
PART B: Write-Up Content and Quality (40 points): Next, write the complete answers to the following questions in your own words. Be sure to address all parts of each question to receive full credit. Clearly label the four answers. 1. Summarize the article. What is this specific article about? What is being studied specifically? What are the methods (i.e., participants, procedures, and relevant measures)? What are the results? Describe the major findings/relationship(s) between variables. (1-2 pages) 2. How does this article relate to the research topic you have chosen? Specifically, what can be taken from this article to support an answer to your research question? Be sure to explain how a specific finding from the article addresses this question/topic. Do you think the study does a good job answering this question? Why or why not? (1⁄2 - 1 page) 3. Why is this research topic an important issue to society and you? In addition to relating this to your own life, what are some real-world implications of this research? How might the findings be applied? What are future directions for this research? For example, what specific questions remain unanswered that future studies might be able to address? Note: The discussion section is a good source for this information. (1 page) 4. What does this project/experience contribute to your understanding of psychology as a science? For example, comment about how psychological science is based on objective, empirical research studies rooted in the scientific method. Pick out specific details/elements of the study that illustrate the scientific method and support the fact that psychology is a science. Review Chapter 1, Section 4 and incorporate some of this information in your response. (1⁄2 - 1 page) You should be turning in 3-5 pages of written content that answer the questions specifically. Create separate sections for each of the four questions.
Write-up must be organized, clear, and concise. Please type using 12-point standard (e.g., Times New Roman) font double-spaced with 1-inch margins. Attach the first page of the article to the back. Be sure your full name and class are written on the first page. All instructions must be followed (including formatting and separate sections for each question).

1. Summarize the article. What is this specific article about?
The article is about the factors that affect the memory functioning. There are various ways in
which the memory is affected both positively and negatively. The article also revolves around
different causes of memory dysfunction or those hinder normal functioning of the brain. Some of
the factors as well stated in the article they include, stress as the primary cause of memory loss.
According to Srull, as he has spelled out the various ways in which the stress destroys the
functioning, and the remembering power of the mind in greater extends (Srull, T. K., 2014).
Specifically, the article narrates the different methods of solving such cases of stress that cause
malfunctioning of the brain. Fear makes someone forget things very quickly, as these results into
the wrong coordination of the mind and the body functions and the physical life which are
critical. The article also looks into the various ways of improving and restoring the memory to its
normal conditions. Among other causes of memory, dysfunction includes brain tremors and other
illness that affects the brain.
What is being studied specifically?
The surveyed area as per the article is the ways of means of improving the memory
functioning and also the ways in which the brain is lost or affected negatively. Some of them
mentioned in the article of solving the calamity of memory loss includes doing more exercise as
this reduces the brain tremors into greater extends (Oosterlaan, J., 2013). Eating recommended
food by the nutrition officer, and taking prescribed medication for such conditions will help in
reducing the brain problems.

What are the methods (i.e., participants, procedures, and relevant measures)?
According to the article, the methods of getting exact information concerning the memory loss
and also the ways of improving the brain functioning involved the adults. This because they have
the better experience, they much succumb to the illness, and it can be highly controlled by the
trained brain officers. The procedures for conducting the research as from the article include
traveling and interviewing the adult’s people from different areas (Ganguli, M., 2015). Preparing
questioners for the doctors who have the better understanding of the condition, and also the
affected patients who will give out the information of the how they feel about the illness. The
appropriate measures that are taken to curb this disease include, recommending particular kind of
food, that regulate the behavior, strictly following to the prescribed medications by trained
doctors through this it will controlling the illness.
What are the results?
The outcomes are finding out the possible causes of the brain problems, and the best ways of
curbing the brain effects. From the article, it is well clear that all the possible causes of memory
problems can be cured or rather controlled. The findings have concluded that unless there are
extreme cases of memory loss or its effects, they can be cured or controlled at early stages.
Describe the major findings/relationship(s) between variables.
The concluded results from the article are that the future technology is trying to solve the
memory problems to completion. This is well seen from the article; in those better medicines of
curing the diseases are seen being invented (McGough, E. L., 2014). The variables are both
similar this because they are to be used in place for one another as compared to other variables
that are unique. There are better ways of curing elaborated condition above.
