Critical Reading, Thinking, and Research Synthesis Presentation Preparation and Creation A synthesis is a paper, discussion, or presentation that draws on three or more sources. You will create your synthesis presentation for this course using three of the sources from your researched argument. In order to create your synthesis presentation, you must identify relationships among the three sources you select. This process is nothing new for you, since you infer relationships all the time - say, between something you have read in the newspaper and something you have seen for yourself or between the teaching styles of your favorite and least favorite instructors. In fact, in the research papers you have written, you have most likely already created some syntheses by using multiple sources to support a specific point in your argument. In your synthesis, you must create a presentation that makes explicit the relationships that exist among your three separate sources and explain the importance of this occurrence. Therefore, you need to identify three sources wherein the expert sources have each made two of the same points as each of the other sources. A. Your first set of tasks is to achieve the following: ➢ Select a set of three expert sources from your researched argument source-set that you have determined to be similar in argument and/or theory. ➢ Create (you should already have this) a complete MLA8e citation for each source. ➢ Develop a list of each of the following for each source: 1. Three original paraphrases accurately presenting a similar argument or theory from your expert sources; 2. Three quotations accurately presenting another, different, but similar among the experts, argument or theory; ➢ Create a table or chart that presents the above synthesized information. So that you can literally see the synthesis of ideas/arguments/theories across the expert sources. B. Your second set of tasks is as follows: ➢ Create a PowerPoint presentation or Slideshare of your synthesis. Your presentation should be well-developed enough that, if you were to actually present it to an audience, it would take you about 5-10 minutes to do so. ➢ The first slide should be a title slide. This slide should provide the type of information given on the first page of a paper written in MLA style but should not be set up exactly the same. You may be creative but not so creative as to leave out the pertinent MLA required items of information. ➢ Second, you need to create a slide(s) that offer an explanation of your purpose which will include all of the following: 1. the research topic, 2. the expert sources selected, 3. the common argument and/or theory given by the experts regarding the topic, 4. the intended audience, 5. evidence of the importance of the selected argument/theory 6. a statement of your purpose in creating and presenting this synthesis. Critical Reading, Thinking, and Research Synthesis Presentation Preparation and Creation ➢ ➢ ➢ ➢ 7. This is your introduction. The following slide(s) should present the synthesis of your created original paraphrases in the form of a chart or table. Be certain to credit each source using an in-text citation.* The purpose of the table is to show, make visible and undeniable to your audience, the synthesis of ideas through the paraphrases you have created from the original works. The next slide(s) should present the synthesis of your selected original quotations in the form of a chart or table. Be certain to credit each source using an in-text citation.* The purpose of the table is to show, make visible and undeniable, your audience the synthesis of ideas in the form of direct quotations. The slide following your synthesized paraphrases and quotations should offer a summary of your findings regarding how or why it is important that these expert sources are of the same opinion regarding this research subject. In other words, explain why it is meaningful to the research argument that these esteemed experts make the same points. This is your conclusion. The last slide must be your Works Cited slide. *This may only occur once or it may occur multiple times depending on how you choose to set up your tables. THE SYNTHESIS What is synthesis? • Definition: – Synthesis is the combining of separate elements or substances to form a coherent whole. What is a synthesis presentation? • Definition: – A synthesis presentation brings together your research observations with the ideas of other writers, your expert sources. Process of synthesis development: • Through research, assemble ideas from various sources (books, journals, Internet articles) related to an aspect of your major research topic. • Discover the similar ideas, theories, and/or arguments put forth by your expert sources. Make the Synthesis Visible • Identify your three sources on the topic; • Select direct quotations that reflect the like• • thinking of your sources on one specific point; Create paraphrases that reflect the like-thinking of your sources on a different specific point; Articulate them on a chart, table so you can see the synthesis. Bookends for the Synthesis Presentation • You synthesis presentation will be a PowerPoint • • presentation or Slideshare or video. The bookends are the introduction and conclusion in the form of slides or videography. Note: It is ALWAYS wise to create an outline for any major assignment. However, for synthesis presentations, this step is essential if you are to clearly and logically organize your multiple sources so that the synthesis becomes clear and evident to your intended audience. Works Cited • Include a Works Cited slide at the very end of the presentation. • There will be a minimum of three citations because you must synthesize three sources. • You may use a hook and add a forth source. Putting It All Together • Using your bookends and charts, create your presentation. • See the assignment sheet and follow the steps to create a powerful and effective synthesis presentation.
