Description

Please respond to the question in the "Instructor Post". Answer must be in APA format and have at least 250 words. At least 1 reference must be used. The original question and my initial response is also posted below...but you only need to respond to the instructor post.

Original Question:

Argue that the Turing Test is a strong and valid test for human-like intelligence in machines. Propose a single modification that would provide the greatest improvement to the test.

My Initial Response:

The Turing Test is used in testing a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behavior similar to that of humans. The premises used in the test make it a strong and valid test for the machine intelligence. The test involves three terminals physically separated. The first terminal of a human questioner and the other two of a human and a machine respondent provides the comparison between the human responder and the machine response. The ability of the questioner to know which response comes from the computer and the one which comes from the human ensures that the test finds out the abilities of the machine. The test is valid since it provides the tractability of intelligence and the discussion of a broad range of topics (Geman, 2015). The fact that it involves questions about different aspects makes the assessment valid since intelligence cannot be limited to a single field.

The improvement of the Turing Test would make it more efficient in determining the intelligence of the machines. The judgment of the answers based on thinking has been criticized as not presenting the underlying facts of intelligence. The involvement of one questioner and two respondents makes the process dependent on the questioner’s judgment and, the results are entirely based on his reasoning. Therefore, the inclusion of a team of questioners each asking a question would make it more efficient. The involvement of other entities would quantify the results and eliminate error arising from the sole responsibility of the questioner (LaCurts, 2009). The Turing Test, therefore, would be more efficient if it had a team in the place of the single questioner.

Instructor Post:

What do you think of this: we ask many fact type questions in many different fields, such as geography, science, humanity, etc. The computer will likely be able to find the response and give accurate information. We would anticipate that humans would not typically be able to give correct answers to all of these questions, so the weaker one here would actually be the human. Instead of assessing strengths, we could also assess weaknesses. Thoughts?
