How Health Insurance Impacts Preventative Care
After passing ACA (Affordable Care Act), over new 18 million Americans are benefiting
from the insurance coverage. The main reason for passing ACA by President Obama was to
expand insurance coverage and its benefits, including preventive care services (Wallace &
Sommers, 2016). ACA also mandates that the insurance beneficiaries benefit from preventive
care without any cost-sharing among its stakeholders; children, adults, and women. Since the
introduction of mass insurance coverage in the US, there has been a lot of interest to understand
how increased coverage of these preventive services has an overall impact on prevention services
and its outcomes on patient care.
Covered Prevention Care Measures
Evidence-based studies indicate preventive care saves lives by identifying the illnesses
early and providing medical management and control measures early enough to save patient’s
lives. Also, research indicates that preventive care services are costly, and most people could not
afford them, but there has been increased access to preventive care services since the government
introduced mass insurance coverage. While preventive care services cover a lot of services in
healthcare, they can be classified under four categories. The first preventive care services
covered without cost-sharing are counseling and screening services as presented by USPTSF in
the “A” or “B” in the insurance coverage (Agirdas & Holding, 2018). The insurance also covers
immunization programs regarding the Advisory committee of immunization and CDC
immunization recommendations. ACA also recommends and covers the well-being of infants
and children with the provision o preventive care services. Lastly, ACA has authorized the
federal health resources and service administration to provide preventive care for both pregnant
and non-pregnant women.

Frequency of Preventive Care Services Allowed by ACA
ACA has developed management procedures to ensure the beneficiaries do not misuse
preventive services. Some managerial procedures include limitations of some services, frequency
of utilizing preventive services, and treatment requirements. For instance, evidence-based
research indicates that the frequency of re-visitation for preventive services has tripled in
Massachusetts health care facilities since its mass insurance coverage reforms in 2006 (Adams et
al., 2018). Currently, there is no limit frequency limitation for preventive care services, but the
services will only be issued on genuine medical reasons for checkups. There is no limit on
visitation for preventive care frequency due to different severity of individuals to different
diseases.
How Utilization Changes
Vaccines have been introduced under the new changes in the insurance coverage of
diseases such as pneumonia, polio, meningitis, flu, and measles. The introduction of vaccines for
these diseases prevents death due to the high mortality rate caused by these diseases. More
changes have been made in insurance coverage for pregnant women and their infants in which
they can make checkup visits from pregnancy up to when their child reaches 21 (Hong, Jo &
Mainous, 2017). Initially, the limit was from pregnancy to 3 years, but the essence of extending
the age of preventive care services is due to research indicating that most teens below 21 lack
insurance and can still benefit from their parents.
The Impact of Preventive Care
A 2004 study in the US showed that half of the deaths in the US were caused by
preventable illnesses and poor eating habits. Since the enforcement of insurance coverage,
preventive care has reduced the major causes of deaths in the US. For instance, smoking and its

health effects have dominated as the main cause of deaths in the US for the last decade by 18.1%
(435,000) of the total deaths, but the rate has reduced to 12.2% (375,000), leaving poor diet and
lack of physical activities as the main cause of deaths in the US at 14.3% (Hong, Jo & Mainous,
2017). Smoking and its associated negative effects are preventable, and the reduction is due to
insurance coverage that gives beneficiaries rehabilitation care to reduce the rates.
Conclusion
Insurance coverage has impacted positively on preventive care and its outcomes.
Increased insurance coverage has increased the number of Americans taking on preventive care
measures to reduce illnesses and overall mortality rate.
