1. Most people see change as threatening. Studies show that even when change is necessary,
people still try hard to find evidence that it is not. Resistance to change can be broken up
into two parts. Individuals consisting of new characteristics such as perceptions, and
needs, or organizational, which is in the making of the organization. Briefly, individual
sources include habit, security, economic factors, for prices that pay is heavily linked to
productivity, of course fear of the unknown, and lastly selective information processing
or hearing only what you want to hear! For organizational sources, structural resistance or
organizational resistance to change, group inertia or the inability for individuals to
change the group. Threat to expertise and threat to established power relationships.
Organizations can overcome the many resistances to change by: 1) Educations and
communication; it helps sell out the idea of change and clear up misunderstandings. 2)
Participation; people will resist less to a decision they agree on, 3) Building support and
community; consulting and therapy, training and paid leave 4) Positive relationships;
people will be more willing to change if they trust managers, 5) Implementing change
fairly 6) Manipulation, 7) Selecting people who accept change, and lastly, 8) Coercion;
direct threat or force on the defectors.
