Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold Backgrounds

Eric Harris and Dylan are a pair of mass murderers accountable for the April 20 1999
columbine high school massacre. Harris was born on April 9, 1981 in Wichita Kansas. Due to
the nature of his father’s work as an army officer, they tended to keep moving around until his
father retired in 1993 and they settled in Littleton, Colorado for three years. It is here while
attending Ken Caryl middle school that he me Dylan and became friends (Networks, 2016).
However, it was not until 1995 that Harris mental problems began to become evident when he
was attending Columbine High School. The first signs of his behavior emerged when in his first
year, he met a girl named Tiffany Typher with whom they attended homecoming together. When
Typher refused to go out with Harris again, he acted a fake suicide where he sprawled himself on
the floor covered by fake blood. That same freshman year, he and Dylan got employment at the
Blackjack Pizza. There is no evidence of crime before he and Dylan met. At some point, Harris
tried unsuccessfully to enlist to the army, but was denied due to his use of antidepressant pills.
Dylan Klebold was born on September 11, 1981 in Lakewood, Colorado (Harris and
Dylan, 2015). His father worked as a geophysicist and his mother worked in aid of the disabled.
Dylan was enrolled in a program for gifted children in his elementary school and was described
as a shy, but intelligent child. Like Harris, he enjoyed violent video games such as ‘Doom’ and
‘Quake’. As a shy and quiet kid, he resented school (Columbine high school), a view shared by
Harris as they were frequent targets of bullying and they felt that they did not fit in due to their
unpopularity in school.
The first reported documented crime by both Dylan and Harris was in 1998 when they
broke into a van and stole valuables. Since it was their first offense and also them being minors

(both 17 years old), they were directed to community service, psychiatric treatment and
counselling.
In personal writings, Harris and Dylan both seemed to share in anger and hatred for those
around them and are also seen to be active bullies to those below them in school (Langman,
2009). The most conspicuous sign however is when Dylan and Harris make a clip of themselves
acting to shoot fellow students in hallways as a school project.
Summary of the crime
On April 20, 1999, Harris and Dylan executed their plan. They had made pipe bombs and
purchased firearms and believed their actions would bring them vengeance against everyone.
Their plan had been to place the pipe bombs at various points in the cafeteria so as to have the
school evacuated through the main exit where from their chosen vantage points, they would open
fire and kill as many as possible. Time bombs set in their cars were also designed to strike the
arriving police and paramedics who would come...
