As the film begins, Mayer Rothschild is shown as a money trader who is discriminated by the tax
agents due to his Jewish roots. The tax man overcharges Rothschild and demands that he pays
20,000 gulden coins which he opposes as being too high. The tax collector allows reducing his
tax due from 20,000 to 2,000 by accepting a bribe of 5,000. News reaches Rothschild of traders
who had brought him 10,000 guldens had been intercepted by tax collectors who make him
suffer a heart attack. On his deathbed, Rothschild tells his five sons including Nathan that he had
always tried to be as honest as possible, but government authorities have always shortchanged
him particularly because of his Jewish origin. He instructs his sons to look for money for it is
power aggressively. He tells them to use the money to defend fellow Jews who are regarded as
second class citizens. He also tells his sons to start bank businesses in different cities across
Europe one in Frankfort, Vienna, London, Paris, and Rome. This is to ensure that they will not
have to send money across long distances if the need arose but can depend on each other. He
instructs them to stick together and should always ensure no one fails where the other succeeds.
