The Inevitability of the Holocaust
Regrettably, human history is filled with unnecessary violence. Though, perhaps the
biggest demonstration of it occurred during the Second World War. Beyond the millions killed in
raids and bombings, more than six million people are believed to have been murdered during the
Jewish genocide. From a modern perspective, it is very difficult to look back at times and
rationalize the events that occurred. When thinking about the Holocaust, most of us will eventually
wonder if anything could have been done to stop it. After all, not every citizen in Germany could
have agreed to the white supremacist standards that had been incorporated into Nazi ideology. To
some, the Holocaust remains shrouded by a fog of irrational, racial hatred. Nazi Germany,
motivated only by its prejudice towards the Jewish people, perpetrated the incarceration,
experimentation, torture and death of millions of people. While antisemitism was a strong
motivator, conflicts as big as the Holocaust cannot be reduced to a single point of influence.
Likewise, we cannot reduce the conflict to something that happened with haste. These processes
take the time to come into existence; it is not overnight that an economy gets wrecked, or that
social attitudes change. Unfortunately, this makes events like the Holocaust almost impossible to
prevent, though it is certainly possible to stop it from finalizing. That is not to say, however, that
such an event was intended or meant to happen as if it simply had been determined by fate. The
complex economic and political, together with a culture of anti-Semitism, of Germany, made it
the perfect habitat for the growth and development of the attitudes that led to the Holocaust.

For context, Germany was still dealing with the aftermath of the loss of the First World War, which
had a strenuous toll on the financial well-being and general morale of the German population. As
Jurgen Kocka puts it: "Who could have overlooked the consequences of the first world war and
the humiliating defeat which was not really accepted by most Germans?" (4). The sanctions
imposed on the nation, together with the losses and expenses suffered throughout the conflict,
created an environment of financial instability that was severely affecting the German people.
After their defeat and their perceived role as an instigator of the war, Germany had great difficulty
establishing trading relationships with neighboring nations. Inflation was ensuring that the people
no longer had access to their needs, together with foreign occupiers on certain regions of Germany
and the loss of other lands after the previous war. In a time when the economy was deeply
dependent on the production of agricultural goods, the loss of fertile lands for harvesting made the
German economy significantly weaker. And, the Great Depression was only going to worsen,
during the 1930s, and affect the entire European continent. Together, all these things combined
can lead to a situation of crisis, that often results in the outspoken voices of certain groups,
determined to find a way to a solution. It does not help that economic tension tends to lead to
cutbacks in social services, leading to lower standards of living. There will be fewer hospitals
equipped to handle disease and fewer schools capable of handing out a prope...
