Description

The first writing assignment centered upon the definition of the sociological viewpoint toward social problems, and an identification of a social problem that we felt was one of the most significant in society. This paper, will expand upon our understanding of the social problem through analyzing the organizations that are committed to addressing it. For example, with respect to the problems of homelessness, we see a variety of local and national level organizations that seek to enable people the opportunity to have permanent housing. Habitat for Humanity would be an excellent example of an organization that deals with such a concern. In the same sense, we may look at the Salvation Army as a type of organization committed to helping impoverished people, or people recently released from prison or drug treatment, to find gainful employment and reclaim a quality-of-life. Your job in this paper will be to do your own independent research on two organizations that are committed to the social problem chosen in the first writing assignment (view attachment).

Isabel Kasabiti SOCI212 I002 SPR 17 American Public University Dr. Marnie E. Carroll May 12, 2017 Introduction  In the presentation I will be able to explore why some social problems are regarded as more significant than others.  The main focus will be based on defining sociological viewpoint.  I will also choose one social problem that I think is of high importance. Sociological approach  The sociological approach toward s social problem is somehow different from other approaches.  The first different is that the approach focuses on selfconsciousness and building awareness that influences an individual interaction with society.  This perspective is based on the fact that when a given society places more significance on some problems than others, the problems becomes real after they have been subjectively defined or perceived to be problematic.  Additionally, it is has also been noted that according to the authors, some conditions may exist that may hurt individuals but the conditions are not social problems not until they have been categorized to be problematic (Doerner & Demuth, 2012). Sociological imagination and societal problem  One social problem that exists within the society is teen     pregnancy. Many of teen girls within the society do not plan when they get married. The pregnancies have different risks to both the mother and the baby. The sociological imagination helps us to connect a personal trouble with the societal problem. For example, we are able to personalize one story of teen pregnancy and employ it as an example hence help us in addressing the issue in the society. Strategy that could help to reduce or eliminate teen pregnancy  The problem has continued to increase within the society.  Creation of Teen Campaigns have been enhanced to reduce the incidence of teen pregnancy. Concepts relate to teen pregnancy  One concepts related to the chosen problem is social justice.  The society has come together and understood how teen pregnancy has affected the society in a negative way.  They have undertaken actions on how to address the social problem.  Another concept is social innovation, which means that society has defined new ways that are meant to address the problem. Sociological theories/perspectives related to teen pregnancy  The different sociological theories or perspectives that relate to teen pregnancy are:  functionalist theory and  conflict theory.  Functionalist theory suggests that social problem like this one weakens the stability of a given society.  Conflict theory suggests that social problem may arise due to fundamental faults in terms of the structure of the society. Conclusion  Throughout the course we have been analyzing social problems within the society from a sociological perspective.  It is very important to know how sociology looks at the nature of social problems in society today. Introduction
The society we live in today contains people faced with social problems such as poverty,
unemployment, homelessness, family problems, families living with crime victims etc. these
social problems in their distinct magnitudes rely on a sociological imagination concept to be
sociologically understood. Serge Kraus explores a different approach by explicitly contending
that the social problems we consider individual are actually based on problems that originate
from the aspects of the society we partake of. The troubles we see other people going through
aren’t indeed personal as they seem rather are rooted in the social struc...
