The two videotaped lectures advocate for business-based approaches to solving social problems.

For this discussion, first summarize Yanus' and Porter's central arguments (contentions or claims) in favor of a business-based approach to solving social problems.

Then, answer these questions: Do business-based approaches offer more effective strategies for tackling social problems? And, what impact would adopting this approach have on the nonprofit sector? Please provide concrete examples from your experience or the readings up to this point to support your answer to these questions.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words. You will also need to post a response to at least two of your classmates' posts.

Also, make sure that your response(s) are substantial and consist of at least 100 words.

Need responses to these two post as well

1. Yanus’s argument is about coming out of a dark place and being useful to another human being. Yanus started his mission by being useful to other humans so he visited a village nearby the university to make the change. Yanus's mission consisted of him lending a small of money to give to those that were borrowing $27. It did not sit well with him that people were struggling over the small amount of $27, so he took matters into his own hands by giving his own money to those in need. Yanus believed that if he was able to make a lot of people happy with a small amount of money that he should do more to make more people happy. Although the bank did not want to lend money to poor people he became a guarantor in order to take risk for people so that they can get money from the banks. By doing this he was able to create his own bank in 1983.

Porter discussed how businesses can help social problems. He mentioned how the progress for social problems is not fast enough. There are only short-term solutions to the problem rather than long-term solutions. He stated that this is because we do not have the correct resources such as money, tax revenue, and donations to deal with problems at scale. With resources being limited the scarcity is growing. If enough resources are created to meet a need you can have a profit.

I do believe business-based approaches offer more effective strategies for tackling social problems. As Porter discussed in his TEDTalk, businesses generate resources when it makes a profit. Profit is Magic because it can allow solutions that were created to be infinitely scaled. This causes the solution to be self-sustained. According to Porter, Corporations have $20.1 trillion in total revenue while non-profits have 1.2 in total revenue resources. If Non-profits have enough resources they will not have to be worried about how to be successful and need more money. They would be able to expand the organization’s services.

2. Mohammad Yunus was able to use his wealth to help poor people in his country. The banks were not willing to help, and the people in his country were forced to become in debt to loan sharks who offered high stake pay back options. By convincing the bank to lend him money to help these people by using his own credit, Yunus was able to start a business helping poor people by loaning them money. By taking a business approach to helping solve his country's social and financial problems, Yunus was able to help people in need while also making a profit off of interest. Business-based approaches usually do not help social problems as much as non-profit sectors. For example, for-profit businesses are not concerned about safety hazards and pollution, because businesses have to spend a lot of money to clean pollution and establish safety protocols. Non-profit sectors are more concerned about serving there mission and receiving donations from people who care about the community. If for-profit companies do become more concerned about people's lives, they could become profitable while caring for the environment but it is an opportunity that is often overlooked my companies that are concerned more about making a profit. Consumers are beginning to become more concerned about the environment, and they are changing businesses perspective because they only purchase from companies who are "going green". If consumers continue to only purchase from for-profit companies who serve missions similar to non-profit organization's missions, we could see for-profit companies tackle social problem solutions like we have never seen before from a scale of non-profit organizations.
