For instance, if there are seven steps to performing a job that are taught during training, it is important that the employee retains those seven steps when performing the job solo. There are two different types of transfer, including positive and negative. Positive transfer is when job training increases job performance (Levy, 2013). Negative transfer, on the other hand, is when performance declines as a result of job training (Levy, 2013). Organizations can increase positive transfer by mimicking the actual job during training. For instance, when doctors are training employees, they take them in the field and have them meet with patients and perform job functions alongside the doctor. That way, the new employees are already performing the job tasks as a part of the training. If new doctors were trained only in an office using a powerpoint, however, negative transfer would be more likely. There is also something called motivation to transfer, which refers to when employees are motivated to transfer the skills learned in training to the actual job environment (Franke & Felfe, 2012). Training transfer could be measured how it effects job performance.
