please explain buoyancy

Surface area has nothing to do with buoyancy. 

It's the density, which is the weight divided by the volume. If the overall density of the object is less than the density of the same volume of water, it will float. Otherwise it will sink. 

Another way to express it is if the displaced water (displaced by the object in question) weighs more than the weight of the object, then it will float.
