Description

As you have learned in the Activity "Understanding the Purpose of Sources," assessing intentions and bias is an important step when vetting your sources for your research. Name two of the examples that the text provides of what to look for when deciding if there is bias in a source. Next, find an article on gun control in the Umass Global Virtual Library. According to the criteria for detecting bias in the Activity, do you think the article is biased? Why or why not? Please list your source in APA format.

Understanding the Purpose of Sources

Understanding why a source was created is important when determining its value. Assess the intentions and level of bias of the source. The more controversial the issue, the more likely the author is writing to promote a certain view. Bobish & Jacobson offer some useful advice for evaluating a source’s bias:

“Bias can be difficult to detect, particularly when we are looking at persuasive sources that we want to agree with. If you want to believe something is true, chances are you’ll side with your own internal bias without consideration for whether a source exhibits bias. When deciding whether there is bias in a source, look for dramatic language and images, poorly supported evidence against an opposing viewpoint, or a strong leaning in one direction.”

Understanding the author’s intended purpose is important, since, if the intent is to sell, persuade or entertain, then the credibility of the source is questionable. Also check to see if the author purposely omits details or data that might weaken his/her argument (Bobish & Jacobson). Insights into the author’s purpose will clearly determine whether or not you should include a source.

Applying the CRAAP approach will make this step of the research process more manageable. Evaluating sources is a critical step in developing a solid research paper, so plan to spend adequate time doing your research. In the next section, we will briefly review some disciplinary concerns when evaluating sources.
