Question Description

Create a "mini-proposal" which outlines a research project focused on a specific problem or question and utilizes a specific qualitative method Case Study and Mixed Methods, while also addressing the role of qualitative research in the applied field of program evaluation. Emphasis should be placed on clear definition of the phenomena to be investigated, referenced procedures and methods for the investigation, and detailed description of the form and substance of expected findings from this mock study. This assignment should also address the strengths and weaknesses of applying qualitative methods as opposed to quantitative methods to answer the proposed research question.

Case study method takes the form of past reports and studies and allows a researcher to explore
and understand complex issues. It is a robust research method especially when the researcher
needs a holistic and in-depth investigation. It is particularly used in social science studies. With
the limitations of quantitative methods in providing in-depth and holistic analysis of questions,
case studies allow for social and behavioral problems to be investigated appropriately. A
researcher goes past that quantitative statistical results and gains an understanding of behavioral
conditions through the perspective of the actor. Case studies include both quantitative and
qualitative data to explain both the process and results of a phenomenon using observation,
reconstruction and analysis of a case. Mixed method research is a collection of both quantitative
and/or qualitative data and use them in a single study. Data in a mixed method study are
collected sequentially or concurrently and is only integrated at a single stage of the study.
There are several designs of case studies namely exploratory, descriptive and explanatory. The
present essay will concentrate on an exploratory case study. An exploratory case study seeks to
explore a phenomenon in the data which can be used as a point of interest for the researcher. For
instance, when a researcher conducts an exploratory case study to determine individual’s reading
process. Some of the questions that can be generally posed include: Does a student have any
strategies when reading? If so, how often? General questions are important when a researcher
wants to open up opportunities for more examination of the phenomenon under observation. In
