Description

U1L01B1 - Unit 1 Blog The year is 1960 and your class is building a time capsule. You have been given the job of chronicling the importance of technology, specifically television. Write a message explaining its importance in changing politics as you knew it in 1960s. As part of your assignment you must also predict how you think this will change the future of politics. In your response, address the areas below.

  1. Impact on the 1960 presidential election
  2. How television can both hurt and help a candidate
  3. Future implications of TV and politics

U1L02B1 - Unit 1 Blog in the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility--I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it--and the glow from that fire can truly light the world. And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country.

- John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address, 1961

What do you believe this quote says about Kennedy as a president? Given all that was happening in the country at that time, how this speech made you, as a citizen, feel?

Why has the following excerpt from the Inaugural Address been so often quoted? Why do you think so many Americans are familiar with those words?

  • "...ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country."

U1L03B1 - Unit 1 Blog You are a surviving member of the Bay of Pigs invasion. Several years following the failed invasion, you made your way back to the United States. Now, as an elderly man, you have decided to write a memoir about this time in your life. A publisher would like to take on this project but would first like to see a page or two about the day of the invasion. Post your story about your experience on that fateful day.

U1L04B1 - Unit 1 Blog By October 22 President Kennedy had made his decision; it was now time to announce it to the world.

Listen to the speech here in which he announced the quarantine of Cuba.

Answer the following questions:

  1. What, according to Kennedy, was the purpose of the missile sites in Cuba?
  2. Why, according to Kennedy, did the presence of the missiles pose a threat to the United States?
  3. Kennedy referred to the 1930s. What specifically was he referring to and, more importantly, what was to be learned from it?
  4. Kennedy's first action was to institute a "strict quarantine." What did he mean by this?
  5. What other steps did Kennedy plan to take?

U1L05B1 - Unit 1 BlogMost people who were alive when Kennedy was assassinated can remember exactly where they were, what they were doing, and how they felt. Imagine you were alive and were able to experience what everyone else did. How would you respond when asked, "What were you doing and how did you feel when Kennedy was shot"?

Post a narrative response to the above question.

Technology, especially television, has both positive and negative impact. One of the positive
impact can be drawn back in 1960 whereby the first presidential debate occurred. This was
important because it enabled the citizens and to gauge the two competitors on important
matters such as education. Television can help a candidate in that he/she can be able to
express his/her agendas to many people at once without incurring significant questions.
However, it can hurt a candidate if the particular individual has inadequate skills as well as poor
dressing mode. TV will have greater impacts in future since more people will be able to follow
political news more closely and thus they will choos...
