Slavery in Virginia and South Carolina
Slaves suffered different experiences in different states such as South California and
Virginia. For instance, slaves in South Carolina worked in rice farms which were more
dangerous and difficult as compared to the experiences of slaves in Virginia working in the
labour intensive agricultural industry of growing and harvesting cotton and tobacco (Hadden,
2001). Rice plantations operated on a task system and thus provided the slaves time off after
finishing their work in South Carolina as compared to slaves in Virginia who worked full time
with limited time to rest. Virginia was among the first states to recognize slavery as hereditary
with slaves being held for life which made it difficult for slaves to gain their freedom (Hadden,
2001). South Carolina slaves experienced even worse experiences after the passing of
