The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation is a non-profit charitable
created in 1968 with the aim of providing legal help to employees whose legal and civil rights
are violated through coercion or compulsory unionism abuses (Edwards, 2011). The help is
provided in form of education programs, public awareness, and information as well as
strategic litigation. The body operates under the right-to-work statutes which restrict
employers and trade unions from payment of dues or making membership a compulsory term
of employment in their collective bargaining agreements before or after the hiring of their
employees. The guiding principle is the belief that no one in their individual or group
capacity should be compelled to remit dues to any union so as to get or retain their jobs,
despite the presence of numerous non-union jobs.
Until 1968, the victims of forced unionism encountered a lonely and exposed position
as they tried to oppose. Employers and union officials constantly abused employees, who had
no defense or backup even from the government agencies. Seeking legal recourse was equally
unsuccessful as a majority of the law specialists either worked for the employers or the
unions. As such individual workers who sued employers run enormous risks. It is the
outrageous demand and need for a legal entity to support the undermined workers that led to
the formation of the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation whose purpose was
providing free legal help to the victims. The body would advocate and fight for the rights of
victims through the court system rather than work in the legislative arena to protect
employees.
The legal aid program is drawn to meet two specific objectives. First, to enforce
existing rights against compelled unionism abuses and second, to win new legal models
expanding these protections and rights. Since inception, the body has experienced a rapid

growth in the caseload with new victims of coercion and denied rights rising every day. In
essence, abuse may take up different forms from the injustices, violation of civil rights, social
injustices, violence, and violation of legal protections. This thereby presents an extensive
work base for the entity. However, the organization suffers from limited resources as it relies
heavily on donations and contributions from like-minded parties. This also implies the need
of a strategic management process for the reported cases. Typically, reported instances are
prioritized based on the magnitude, severity, factual strength, probable costs and the
