Essay Rubric Prompt and Examples: THE 2 Scriptural excerpts I chose are Jain Scriptures and Confucian Scriptures. They are sent to you. Choose at least two sets of scriptural excerpts from our readings on D2L (consider one "set" to be probably one of our pdf files, e.g., "Mahayana Buddhism 1", "Selections from Guru Granth Sahib", etc.). For this first assignment, choose scriptural excerpts from two Asian religions (i.e., Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Taoism, Confucianism, or Shinto). Compare and contrast these readings by focusing on one particular issue or question. Begin your paper by making clear what issue, theme, or question you have chosen to explore through the scriptural readings you have selected to compare/contrast. - Some examples: Compare/contrast moral ideas about what it means to be the ideal person in Taoism and Confucianism; Compare/contrast portrayals of soteriology and how karma works in Jainism and Buddhism; Compare/contrast the way god/gods are portrayed in Sikhism and Shinto; Compare/contrast the way women and goddesses are portrayed in Hinduism and Sikhism; or any religious topic that interests you within your chosen scriptural excerpts. Tips to Succeed: You can contact your Professor (well in advance of the deadline) for feedback on whether a particular topic is good/workable based on the readings you have chosen. You must demonstrate your thorough reading and understanding of your chosen scriptural excerpts through your writing and back up all of your points with evidence from your chosen readings (cite chapter:verse numbers when given, or at least page numbers). You do not need a works cited page or bibliography as long as you only cite our class textbook and D2L readings. Writing Rules and Grading: Your paper should be not less than two full, double-spaced pages, in 12 point Times New Roman Font, with 1 inch margins and only your name as a header at the top. Your paper is due through turnitin (on D2L). Be attentive to the policies on plagiarism and late work in the class syllabus. An 'A' paper will be very well written (spelling, grammar, sentence structure, etc. count), demonstrate thoughtful engagement with our readings, and make relevant connections between them.
