Causes of the Civil War
Perhaps the greatest war in the history of western wars to happen between the Napoleonic
and the First World War, the American Civil War was one definitive battle which shaped today’s
United States of America. The differences between the Northern and the Southern parts brought
them to conflict and ultimately war. After becoming the Republican president in 1860, Lincoln
called for abolishment of slavery within the Southern states. These states valued slavery so much
that they seceded from the United States of America, to form their own nation, the Confederate
States of America. The legitimacy of this secession did not please the Northerners as it
threatened the strength of the union. Besides slavery, many other factors led to the Civil War,
with the fiercest battle being fought between 1862 and 1865.
As far as social reasons go, slavery was the highest causation factor of the civil war. The
southern part of United States depended largely on agriculture, farming large tracts of land;
plantations and ranches. For this reason, they depended mainly on slaves to provide cheap
