Trust is a critical aspect for babies. Self-confidence (trusting in one’s own abilities and what one can do) is also critical in being able to reach out to others in a caring manner. A baby becomes confident through close, supportive relationships and having plenty of opportunities to explore and try new things. Babies need opportunities to make things move and spin and rattle and make noise, and they are so pleased when they can do things by themselves or with minimal support or intervention. Most of all, however, they want the people they care about to notice what they do and to respond.
