1. A light plane flew from its home base to an airport 255 miles away.  With the head wind, the trip took 1.7 hours.  The return trip with a tail wind took 1.5 hours.  Find the average airspeed of the plane and the average windspeed.

Assuming the speed of plane is x and the speed of wind is y.

So according to the description,

1.7 (x-y)=255        (1)

1.5 (x+y)=255       (2)

Equation 1 could be simplified as x-y=150

Equation 2 could be simplified as x+y=170

The addition of the two equations above is 2x=320,  x=160

Input x=160 to x-y=150,  y=x-150=10

So average airspeed of the plane is 160 miles/hour, and the average windspeed is 10 miles/hour.
