THE GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS)

Abstract
The Global Positioning System has been one of the most important technological
revelations since the turn of the 20th century. Since the technology was developed and deployed
by the government of the United States of America to get satellite images of different positions
of the earth, its applications have since increased tremendously. While it is clear that it has been
beneficial to the activities of humans, people still do not know the extent to which it has been
useful. Besides, there is little knowledge on how the system works. These two issues lead to the
questions, how does GPS work? And how important is GPS? The paper holds that GPS is very
helpful to human beings since it has made it easy to achieve some goals. In that regard, this
article examines the various mechanisms that are involved in the working of GPS and the role
that it plays in the society.

Introduction
Technology is quickly taking over the world. In almost all aspects of human lives,
technology seems to be taking a prominent role. One of the forms of technology that has caused
a revolution in the manner in which people conduct their affairs is known as the Global
Positioning system (GPS). GPS is a form of technology that uses radio navigation that is
connected to satellites and is used to provide the geolocation information about any objected that
has been hidden from other satellites. The system is owned by the government of the United
States and is run by the United States Airforce. Over the last few decades, this extensive
information and communication system has proven to be very helpful in the sharing of
information by various government agencies (Landau et al, 2009). However, it seems that many
people do not understand the significance of the technology in human lives and even the manner
in which it works so as to achieve its objectives. In that regard, this paper explores the way in
which GPS works and the roles that it plays in communities and as a result making it an integral
part of the society.
Background and significance
In the recent past, nations have been very concerned about what takes around them. In the
current global political situation, there is a lot of stability which forces countries to be on alert at
all times so that they do not get caught flat-footed by their enemies. For example, when cases of
terrorism are increasing, states become worried and seek to know the location of the culprits with
a view of bringing them to justice. One of the best ways of identifying the said individuals from
wherever they are is by use of the Global Positioning System (Tomkiewicz et al, 2010). The

object. From that information, the relevant authorities are at liberty to make decisions by an
informed position.
The significance of carrying out this study is to provide as much information as possible
on the roles that this significant development has to the society as a whole. Recently, a group of
activists came up and denounced all the forms of surveillance as being an affront to the right to
privacy. Their main argument is that the constitution of America provides all Americans with the
right to enjoy their private lives without any fear of being watched by the various ...
