CLASSWORK 1: CONSTRUCTING AN ENHANCED ENTITY RELATIONSHIP MODEL Your task is to construct an enhanced entity relationship diagram to represent the scenario. The classwork contributes 6% to your CS209 coursework mark. Learning Outcomes: After completing this assignment you will have gained experience of analysing a scenario and extracting an entity relationship structure. Task: Read the following description of a . From the specification, produce the following:  A list of the entities and the meaning of each entity.  A list of attributes for each entity;  A list of the relationships giving for each: a relationship name, the names of the entities related, the degree of the relationship and the optionality of the relationship.  An enhanced entity relationship diagram.  A list of any assumptions you have made. Following the instructions, post a partial solution, comment on one of your colleagues solutions and then complete your work. Art Gallery The art gallery holds paintings on behalf of their owners so that the paintings can either be permanently on display in the gallery or on loan to exhibitions around the country. Each owner may have introduced one or more other owners to the scheme. The catalogue of paintings held by the gallery records the name of the artist, the title of the painting, its estimated insurance value, owner and acquisition date. In addition, the gallery wants to record the current location of the painting within the gallery or the venue of the exhibition at which the painting is currently on loan. Any painting currently on loan needs to have an associated insurance certificate that has an id, the insurer name and the insured value. Details about insurances are only recorded for the duration of the loan. The location for a painting at the gallery is the room number of one of the buildings owned by the gallery. Each location is maintained at a specific temperature and humidity. For the artists, basic details of name, date of birth, date of death (if applicable) and nationality are held. In order to maintain a record of the history of a particular painting, the gallery keeps details of the current owner and all previous owners. The gallery keeps a record of all exhibitions to which each painting has been loaned while it has been held at the gallery (loans when the painting was not held at the gallery are not recorded). Exhibitions to which the gallery loans paintings are all privately sponsored and the gallery wants to keep records of which sponsors have sponsored exhibitions where their paintings have been shown. Each exhibition has a venue, a unique title, a start and finish date and details of the exhibition sponsor. Phase 1 Initial Posting During phase 1, you must submit a partial solution to the problem via myplace. This posting MUST NOT be a complete solution but only part of a solution. You will be receiving feedback on your posting from one or more of your colleagues so it would be appropriate to find part of the solution that you are unsure about and post that. You must include a diagram showing the part of the enhanced entity relationship that your text describes. A sample of a phase 1 posting for a different exercise is shown below. Example phase 1 posting: I have a set of entities for the House of Lords which looks something like this (the entity-subentity structure is shown by indentation: Member_of_the_House_of_Lords (id, name, date_of_birth) Hereditary (id) Other (id) Church_of_England(id) Life_Peer(id) Law_Lord(id) Political_Party(pid, name, address) Only two relationships: Name Entities HP Hereditary,Political_party LP Life_Peer,Political_party Degree 1:N 1:N Optionality Optional on both Optional on both The EER diagram is as follows: MHOL d HEREDITARY OTHER d COfE LIFE LAW PARTY What I am not sure of is why all these sub-entities have only one attribute and whether the relationship with party could be a simplified. Phase 2 Follow-up Posting In this phase you should comment on one of your peers’ solutions via the myplace tool. Myplace will ask you to “grade” a submission, but the “grade” that you are assigning will be not important. Instead it is essential to provide feedback: you should formulate a supportive and constructive criticism and make at least TWO points about the submission either agreeing or disagreeing with issues made in the submission. You must not, however, post a complete solution to the problem. The comments you make may include a diagram. If the submission on which you are commenting has fundamental flaws (e.g. it’s empty) you should still post two considered suggestions as your response. Submit your feedback via myplace. Specimen phase 2 feedback. >>What I am not sure of is why all these sub-entities have only one attribute and >>whether the relationship with party could be a simplified. This solution looks good to me. I am pretty sure that sub-entities with a single attribute are OK. All you are trying to do is to distinguish the subtypes. There is clearly a sub-type hierarchy involved but I suspect that there are several ways of constructing it. If you look at it from the point of view of the relationship with political party, you could have a single subtype to represent politically active peers (although I hesitate to start inventing entities that are not mentioned in the spec): >> Member_of_the_House_of_Lords (id, name, date_of_birth) Politically_active(id) >> Hereditary (id) >> Life_Peer(id) Politically_inactive(id) >> Church_of_England(id) >> Law_Lord(id) >>Political_Party(pid, name, address) This change would simplify the EER diagram because you now only need one relationship between members of the house of lords and political parties: PARTY MHOL Has_member d ACTIVE d HEREDITARY INACTIVE d LIFE COfE LAW BTW, I think that you need to add some more symbols to the diagram to make clear the distinction between hierarchical links and relationship links - and also add names to the relationships. Phase 3 Concluding Work During phase 3 you must complete the enhanced entity relationship model and submit it following the steps shown in the instructions below. Marking Criteria: Your coursework submission consists of the following: 1) Your online phase 1 submission (including a partial initial diagram containing only a part of the overall diagram). This is a maximum of one page (one PDF only). (1 mark) 2) Your compulsory phase 2 online feedback posting on myplace. (1 mark) 3) Your complete solution. (4 marks) This is a maximum of two pages (one PDF only) showing: i. A list of the entities and the meaning of each entity. ii. A list of attributes for each entity. iii. A list of the relationships giving for each: a relationship name, the names of the entities related, the degree of the relationship and the optionality of the relationship. iv. An enhanced entity relationship diagram. v. A list of any assumptions you have made (where necessary). Due Date: Due dates of the online submissions (1) and (2) are Monday, 18th October and Monday, 25th October, respectively. Your complete solution (3) should be submitted online at noon on 1nd November 2021.

I do not understand how all these entities could have only one relationship, so I am thinking about how I can
include the location and catalogue information to expose a third or fourth relationship.
