Read the excerpt from ESL Writers by Shanti Bruce and Ben Rafoth (ed.). Though this book was written specifically for writing center tutors, the section here clearly describes the demographics of our student population. Our classes are often a mixed bag, with students coming from many backgrounds, having a hodgepodge of different English skills, and even having very different motivations for taking an ESL course at BU.

Before reading ESL Writers, I had several assumptions about ESL students that were later
challenged by the findings presented in the book. First, I held that ESL students would be
happier to be taught be teachers who were once ESL students. I believed that this would help the
students relate their learning situations in a better way by comparing themselves to the tutors and
using the teachers' experiences as benchmarks for better learning. Moreover, I held that ESL
learners did not put much emphasis on the age of the tutors as long as they were qualified and
experienced. However, upon reading the book, I realized that most of the ESL students believe
that instructors should be much older than their students (Bruce and Rafoth)....
