Description

In this Unit, we learned about different kinds of chemical reactions. You will demonstrate your understanding of these concepts by performing an experiment that focuses on chemical reactions between different substances.

First, formulate your hypothesis (Scientists pride themselves on being able to prove themselves wrong. So don’t worry if your hypothesis turns out to be incorrect!) What do you think the reactions will be between the different kinds of candies when they are placed into the different kinds of soda? Record your predictions. Remember to record a hypothesis for each separate type of candy, combined with each different type of soda.

Next, collect all the necessary items for the lab. You may already have these things around your home, or you should be able to get them easily at any store. You will need:

  • Mentos candies
  • Another type of candy
  • Meter stick
  • Magnifier
  • Test tube

Then, carry out the experiment. Make sure you are wearing your safety equipment, and that you are carrying out the experiment in a box or aquarium that will prevent a mess. Place each different type of candy into each different kind of soda and record the reaction that takes place. Be careful, because this may or may not cause a violent chemical reaction that could result in an overflow of soda.

Finally, you are going to compare the predictions you made in your hypothesis to the results you got when you conducted your experiment. Did the experiment go like you planned? If not, why do you think the results were different from your predictions? Why do you think the experiment turned out the way it did? Were there any additional factors that might have influenced the results of the experiment? If you did the experiment again is there anything you would have done differently?

You will complete a lab report to turn in to report your findings. If you need a review on how to prepare a lab report, return to your Unit 1 Project for guidance.

Final Product: Lab report

Your lab report will be made up of four sections. Each section will be between two and five paragraphs. These should be labelled with individual headers: Question and Hypothesis, Experimental Process, Summary, and Analysis.

You will be graded on each section individually. You will be assessed on understanding of the scientific process, the content of your experiment, and the thoughtful development of your ideas. Notice that the Analysis section is weighted heavier than the others - the Analysis section should discuss what your your results mean, and this is the most important part of your experiment.

15% of your grade will be on grammar, mechanics, and polish. This will include spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, clarity of writing, and organization for ease of reading.

  • An introduction describing your question and initial hypothesis (20%)
  • A description of your experimental process (20%)
  • A summary of your results (20%)
  • An analysis of your results (25%)

You may use online resources to help you create a question or understand your results. This is completely acceptable, as long as you appropriately cite your sources. This paper must be written in APA style, in at least 500 words with strong descriptive details. Refer to the following website for additional help:

Chemical Reactions between Different Substances
Introduction
Industrially produced foods have different chemical compositions that are helpful in
human bodies in different ways. These manufactured foods react with different compounds.
Some of these foods are chemical liquids, solid foods (organic or inorganic), or pasty. Sodas are
some of the chemical liquids that react with other different kinds of food such as candies.
Candies are chemically prepared edible substances with sugar as a major component and are
manufactured under high temperatures (Bell, 2015). Different candies react with various sodas to
produce different outcomes. Some candies will cause soda to erupt; other candies will have no
influence on the soda. This report carries an experiment using candies: Mentos and bumpy Nerds
and sodas.
Aim
To determine the outcomes of reactions of different kinds of candies with different sodas.
Research Questions
i.

What are different results of the reactions between candies and sodas?

ii.

What brings about the results (scientific process)?

iii.

Which candies create the above observable results of the reaction (e.g. an eruption of
soda)?

Hypothesis
All candies result in an eruption sodas

Experimental Process
Material
The necessary items required in this experiment include Mentos and bumpy Nerds
candies, magnifier, test tubes, meter stick, diet Coke soda, protective gear (particularly for eyes),
a backyard, and a timer.
Methodology
Preparation before the start of the experiment is vital. It involves taking equal quantities
of each candy (Mentos and skittles) in each test tube separately. Wear goggles to protect your
eyes from damage that can occur when mixing the candies to the diet soda. Similarly, protective
clothing is necessary to prevent any injury to your clothes or skin in case of any splash from soda
pop. (Science Buddies, 2012).
Using a meter stick, measure a distance of more than 2 meters for a building and do a setup of the experiment such that a magnifier can be used to observe the reaction taking place. Take
a Mentos candies in a test tube and slowly pour in a bottle of diet coke and record the time for
the reaction process that takes place. Repeat the experiment using the bumpy nerds and not the
reaction with the diet coke also. The process is repeated with Pepsi as a different soda for both
candies (Mentos and bumpy Nerds) (Science Buddies, 2012).
Summary of Results
It was observed that there was an eruption that took place in the reaction between the
diet coke and the Mentos candies. The reaction occurred when the candies were poured into a
both of diet coke. Similarly, there was a geyser formed between the bumpy Nerds and the diet
coke and Pepsi sodas. The formation of geyser was stronger (higher sodas splashes) with Mentos

in diet coke than for the bumpy Nerds with the coke. Similar situation happened when Pepsi was
used
The occurrence of the reactions began with the candies sinking and dissolving in the
sodas. The process of the reactions was evident by the foaming in soda bottles. The vibrancy of
the reactions between the two sodas and the two candies varied. The effervescences between
both Mentos and bumpy Nerds and Pepsi were stronger than vibrancies in diet coke with the
candies.
Results Analysis
The reactions between the candies and the sodas imply there are interactions between the
chemical components in the candies and these in the sodas. According to Benvenuto (2014), the
small pores in the candies cause a disruption of polar forces of attraction between molecules of
water. This interaction forms nucleation sites that permit conglomeration of molecules of gas in
the sodas. It, in turn, weakens the surface tension of the drink and the forces exhibited by ...
