a. What were the results of the 1860 election, and why did it trigger a secession
movement in the Lower South? How did the Upper South respond to the

slavery in the election?
The 1860 presidential election in the United States despite being considered
important for the nations it however established the stage for civil war in America
(Thompson, 2016). The country was divided during most of the 1850s based on the
states’ rights and the abolition of slavery in various territories. In the 1860 general
election, the slavery issues emerged. This fractured the dominant Democratic party
for the southern states against the northern fictions with the Republican party. This
was however initiated without the support of southern states. As a result of the
election, there was increased division between the south and northern states.
Following the win by Lincoln’s win, there were looming cases of the emergence of
war. The political parties were seen to be more divided and disunited (Thompson,
2016). This included the republican and democratic candidates with the constitutional
union candidates. The division among these parties was basically the expansion of
slavery. This, therefore, triggered the recession on the southern states that had been
affected by slavery. The South responded to election by not voting to the Lincoln ...
