Question 1
The operational process of the production system in paper manufacturing involves two
key steps: converting fibrous raw materials from trees to pulp and converting the pulp into
paper. Pulp and paper are made from cellulose fibers and other plant fibers. The pulping process
is objected to removing the lignin without losing the fiber strength. The first step in paper
manufacturing is the preparation of the raw material. The kind of wood used at the pulp mill
can be in different forms, mainly depending on the pulping process and the quality of the raw
material (Khakalo et al., 2019). The second stage is separating the fiber, where the wood chips
are kept in a digester, and appropriate chemicals are added in kraft chemical pulping. The
fragments are further digested using steam to separate fibers and dissolve extractives and
lignin. The pulp is then screened, cleaned and water is removed in preparation for paper
making. The raw pulp contains lignin and other discolorations which need to be bleached to
generate white or light-colored papers. The processes involved are oxidation and chlorination.
The bleached and unbleached pulp slurry is further refined to roughen the fiber surfaces
and cut the fibers to enhance the bonding and formation of the fibers during their entry int...
