Finding Reliable Information on the Internet Paper Instructions

For this assignment, you will be searching for and assessing 3 Internet sites that are valid, reliable and appropriate for academic or professional use, and one site that you find to be unreliable based upon evaluation tips you gained from reviewing the links provided in the module. Please do not use Wikipedia or Wiki sites.

Remember, your analysis should focus on the reliability of the web site NOT a discussion of the specific health issue that was the topic of your search nor the article itself.

Please click Here for Step-by-Step instructions on how to complete the assignment. Please note that a PDF will download to your computer for you to open or may open directly in the webpage dependent on the browser you are using.

As an additional tool, you may find the Web Evaluation Checklist here of value in your assessments of the websites you choose.

MODEL 4

INSTRUCTIONS

Age Group and Lifestyle Effects Paper Instructions

You may recall learning earlier in the course that the 10 leading causes of death in the United States have changed considerably since the 20th century. Many of the risk factors associated with the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in adults in the U. S. currently are associated with health behavior and lifestyle choices. Community health workers must understand the health profile and common lifestyle and behavioral patterns of specific age groups in order to develop and offer effective primary, secondary and tertiary intervention programs and strategies. However, getting people to change their behavior can be a “hard sell”.

1. Choose a specific age group as identified in this week’s readings – Adolescent, young adult, or adult

2. Go to this website to view the current facts on the 10 Leading Causes of Death in the U.S. http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/leading-causes-of-death.htm (opens in new tab)

3. Choose 2 causes from the Leading Causes of Death list that can be considered diseases of lifestyle

4. In a paper of 500-600 words, discuss the lifestyle factors in your chosen age group that may be associated with the two causes of death you chose.

5. In your summary/closing of the paper, comment on why you think diseases of lifestyle are so difficult to prevent. In other words, why do the causes of death associated with diseases of lifestyle persistently rank so highly in the U. S.?

This assignment is to be written in APA format (including Title Page and References page). It is suggested that you review the APA 7th Guide regarding APA Format and HSA assignments.

Finding Reliable Information on the Internet Assignment Instructions It can be extremely difficult to determine the reliability of health and wellness information found on the web or in popular media sources. Yet many of us heavily rely on Internet sources to provide us with critical information when we need facts and insights. For example, when we have questions about our health or that of a loved one, or need to find health resources or have questions about a diagnosis we have received. The information is voluminous, but not necessarily accurate, factual or evidence-based. How can you determine which sites offer valid, reliable information, and which sites provide questionable, false or misleading information, or personal perspectives/opinions (i.e., blogs) thatare not necessarily based upon current evidence? In addition to the readings for this module, the resources found on the library website and linked in this module, will be instrumental in helping you to complete this assignment. NOTE: For this assignment, you are searching for websites or web pages - do not use library sites (i.e., SPC Library), publication websites (i.e., do not use a journal article published on a website, such as American Journal of Public Health), or databases (such as Medline or EBSCO), blogs, etc.. Remember, you are not summarizing the content of the sites or reviewing an article; you are critiquing a each website as a whole using the criteria that you have learned from the tools that you reviewed for the assignment to determine the validity and reliability of 3 sites (i.e., do you trust the information/evidence presented on the site?), and one site that you deem to be unreliable or untrustworthy. Step 1 - To Prepare for the Assignment • Review the SPC Library resources on Evaluating Sources of Information at: https://spcollege.libguides.com/evaluating. • Additional Tools you may find useful include (many colleges feature them on their websites as well!): • https://medlineplus.gov/webeval/EvaluatingInternetHealthInformationTutorial.pdf • https://usm.maine.edu/library/checklist-evaluating-web-resources • I expect to see evidence that you have thoroughly reviewed the sites as well as the resources for evaluating a website, Checklist link in the instructions and other resources you may find, and have applied the information to develop a well-articulated critique of your websites – what evidence supports the reliability of 3 of your websites, and what evidence supports the unreliability of 1 website. . . Step 2 - To complete the Assignment 1. Review the contents of the textbook and choose the topic that you would like to learn more about. 2. Find 4 Internet sources of information directly related to this topic and meet the requirements noted in the instructions. • • Rev TT 8/21 Confine your search to sites that are appropriate for academic use. Three of the sites should be from reliable sources and one should be a site that would not be considered reliable. • Note: only oneGov. website may be used for this assignment. 3. You will need to provide separate explanations for why you believe each of the 3 sites are reliable, using evidence to support your determination. Then describe and give evidence to support your determination for one site that you believe is not reliable – thus keep accurate notes! 4. You must provide accurate citations and references for all sites. 5. For this assignment, 3 of your sources must be valid and reliable, and 1 of your critiques should be based upon a site that is unreliable. 6. List the Keywords used in your search, sites and locations (URL address). 7. Use the questions you reviewed in the Lib Guide site or other resources to evaluate the websites and their information – e.g., do you consider the site to be reputable, useful, believable; why or why not; who would benefit from using the site, etc. 8. Write a summary (paper) of your evaluations (450-500 words), including how the site would be useful to a professional searching for information on your topic. In order to receive the maximum numberof points you must provide a clear rationale for your assessment. 9. Answering one or two of the questions is not adequate - you need to give the reader concrete reasons why they can or cannot trust the site that you have chosen. You do not necessarily need to answer all of them in your write-up, but your evaluation must give enough information to support your reasoning. 10. Submit the paper to the dropbox by 11:59 p.m. EST Sunday Important Notes/Expectations • Do NOT simply cut and paste items from the Internet for this assignment – your paper will not be accepted if you do. • This is an APA format assignment. Module 3: The Reliability Of The Web Site
The selected websites are www.healthline.com, www.medicalnewstoday.com, www.airworldwide.com, and www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. These four sites show different features that make
them reliable and valid or unreliable and invalid sites. The keywords in this website search
included leading causes, deaths in the U.S., risk factors, heart disease, cancer, and adults.
Evaluation of Websites and Their Information
www.healthline.com. https://www.healthline.com/health/leading-causes-of-death
The Healthline site has become one of the most reliable and valid websites on matters
about health, as evidenced by being ranked top online health information website. However, this
site gets considered for use because of its currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, objectivity
and purpose. The currency aspect of determining a site’s credibility, validity, and reliability
looks at how old the content is. This website has up-to-date information reviewed in 2020 by
medical professionals. Deborah Weatherspoon medically reviewed and updated the site’s content
on March 29, 2019. This review ensured the information aligns with current research findings on
the leading causes of death in American. Also, the reviewer Weatherspoon has completed a
Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing degree and is an affiliate of the American Association of Nurse
Anesthesiology, American Nurses Association, and National League for Nursing. The general
purpose of this site is to present research on chronic diseases leading to increased mortality rates
in the United States. It contains statistical data to support the findings on these causes.
www.medicalnewstoday.com.https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/282929

3
This website is unreliable and invalid for use. The depth of coverage of the information
about the top causes of deaths in America gives a brief and inadequate overview of the
information. Thus, a reader relying on it cannot connect the data or findings to any research topic
under study. In sum, an aspect making it invalid and unreliable is that it is not run by any
recognized university, nonprofit organization, or government agency. Instead, an individual or a
profit-making company runs it. It ends in .com, and the website has not been around for a while.
As a result, it cannot pass the reliability and integrity test, making it untrustworthy. By
considering the website’s look, it is poorly designed; the likelihood is that amateurs created it.
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK223925/
This NCBI site is reliable and valid run by the government, and it objectively looks at
lifestyle practices that contribute to the cancer burden. Its content uses proper citation to prove its
validity and reliability. The site’s information coverage gives a good overview to help readers
connect various research on the same topic. The main primary purpose remained as lifestyle
behaviors leading to cancer burden. Through this topic, the site focuses on risk factors attributed
to lifestyle practices, which contribute to kidney, lung, colon, and stomach cancers. Therefore,
the website is significantly reliable and valid for use in studying lifestyle effects on health.
www.cbsnews.com. https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/death-index-top-50-waysamericans-die/
A recognized international media organization, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, runs
this CBC News website. The site has a justified record of integrity and reliability since it has
existed for a long time. Jessica Learish updated the site on March 31, 2021; The decision not to

4
hide the name means the author stands by the site information about the leading causes of deaths
among Americans. Thus, the content is credible for use.
Module 4: Age Group and Lifestyle Effects
Heart Disease and Cancer Among Adults
According to the CBC News website, heart disease and cancer are among the 100 ways
of dying in America. This death causes results from certain lifestyle behaviors such as
alcoholism which tend to be risk factors among adults. The primary lifestyle factors associated
with these causes among adults are smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, smoking, and
taking foods with a high cholesterol content.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that heart disease and
cancer top in terms of death-causing illnesses. The National Center for Biotechnology
Information (NCBI) outlined smoking as the primary lifestyle risk behavior leading to these two
causes. According to NCBI, the burden of cancer in American gets traced to modifiable health
practices that accelerate an individual’s risk of illness. Although sun exposure and sexual
practices are cancer risk factors, tobacco use remains a significant factor. The United States
records about 444,000 premature deaths resulting from cancer caused by cigarette smoking. This
smoking leads to lung, colon, stomach, kidney, oral, pharyngeal, laryngeal, and esophageal
cancers.
Heart disease is another cause of death among Americans resulting from consuming a
diet (fatty cuts of meat, ghee, sausages, and pies) high in saturated fats and cholesterol. Likewise,
excessive alcohol consumption raises blood pressure levels, and triglycerides, a fatty substance
level in the blood, are risk factors for heart disease. Women should not take more than one

5
alcoholic drink daily, while men should maintain two drinks per day. Similarly, the NCBI
website reveals that tobacco use that involves cigarettes, cigars, and pipes increases the risk for
heart disease.
Healthline website reveals that smoking among Americans aged above 55 is the leading
cause of heart disease. The site states that smoking men are more vulnerable than women and
that the country records 23.1% of total deaths resulting from heart disease annually. However,
the site highlights a healthier diet, quitting smoking, and physical exercise that lasts 30 minutes
daily as healthy lifestyle practices to prevent the disease. Likewise, the Healthline site attributes
cancer to smoking, alcohol consumption, eat...
