Background of the Civil Rights Movements
The black people experienced slavery and highest levels of oppression by the white
people ever since the settlement of European in the North America. Although the civil war ended
with hope to the black community in the US since the abolition of slavery was adopted, a harsh
and cruel system in the form of the white supremacy ensured subjecting the African American to
extreme treatment.1 The earliest twentieth century saw the increased segregation according to
race in government institutions as well as public accommodations.
The whites and the blacks attended different churches, schools, hospitals, waiting rooms,
hotels, libraries, swimming pools, and restaurants. This racial segregation was prevalent in the
Southern states of America. As a result, the Southern black community was denied of decent
employment opportunities, decent pay, and good schools. At worst, the white supremacist system
denied the African Americans of their fundamental rights of citizens such as the right to vote.
The whites intimidated the blacks through violence including the lynching of blacks which was
always threatening.2 Away from the South, the blacks enjoyed various legal rights although the
issue of discrimination was common in schools and residential places.
Black, as well as some white liberal reformers, worked hard to counter the ever
increasing discriminative practices through the formation of civic lobby groups such as the
